Description
This photo was taken on March 30th, 2007. I know lately it seems as though I'm becoming an innovator of creepy photography, but I'm sure that's because I'm only waiting for the "outside climate" to arrive. This is an interesting spider that I've only seen a couple of times before. Looking like a cross between a Fiddle/Brown Recluse and a yellow Sac spider, I had assumed it was a form of Sac spider.. but when I would bump it's abdomen to get it to scurry, instead it would slowly turn around and actually bite at what was touching it. Very aggressive behavior.. unlike any spider(including the Black Widow) that I've ever dealt with. This one was rather different though. I spotted it inside the big ol' house my brother just bought. A pregnant female I'm guessing. I just had to bottle it up and get some moderate close ups. I finally found out online what it actually is. It's called the Dysderid Spider. This link has all the classification info about it. [link] One closing comment is that this thing has huge fangs.. I'm glad I discovered it bfore it discovered me.(Cropped)

i found a spider like this in my garage while moving some stuff around. it looked like a crab with a giant spider butt. i have a deathly fear of spiders but i still managed to get a couple bad pictures at a distance. lol.
props for you for handling it.

Thanks. So what did you do with the pics? Where are they? All I seen in your gallery were fantastic photos along with a beautiful woman with blue eyes.

lol.. I think it's because just like snakes, their menacing styles have historically placed fear in many, yet the mind holds fascination for what it fears and/or doesn't understand. Like I'm fascinated about ghosts, but I'd probably swallow my tongue if I had an authentic experience with one. But that's just like.. my opinion. So there's nothing wrong with you. Thank you much for the comment.

We all have our little moments. Sometimes life would be boring without random little things like that happening!! And I'm glad nothing was really damaged hehe.

You actually like this shot? I can't stand the fact you can see the cardboard edge. Not very artistic at all, even it's nice and crisp. You must like spiders. I have to admit I have a soft spot for them as well. Thanks for the comments and for adding me as a bud.

=] No problem. The photos I recently took of spiders ended up being really blurry because it was at night and I didn't use my custom settings on my camera, instead I just left it on night scene with some random ISO & shutter speed.

At least you didn't walk into them while trying to focus. Although I've never done that.. I have walked into a telephone pole once while night shooting.

Oh my!! Hah that's funny. I've walked into doors, but I wasn't doing anything that had to do with photography, I was just trying to get in my bathroom to take a shower! I've tripped over random things while photographing before though.

Yeah.. this kind of sucked because I had only just bought it a month earlier and spent quite a bit, but it's my own fault for allowing an idiot moment.. and thank God no damage done.. except for my ego. Did I mention I'm a blonde?

...Grotesque! xD
As far as critique though... I think the cardboard, even though it's a decient referance as to how big the spider really is, detracts a little bit from the spider it's self. But it's good that all lines lead to your subject.
With the brown on the wall higher up, I would have taken the dropper tool, and gotten a ligter brown or white, and colored by hand, a low opacity over it, just to even out the color.
What I would have done to show how big it was, is put a dime behind it and to the left a little, and shot at a slightly lower angle, maybe about ten dagrese. Haveing your angle a little bit lower and with the coin visable, but just a little out of focus menicing (sp) look. I also would have desaturated the darker parts of the spider, in Photoshop, it's hard to tell what's an eye, and the fangs don't look as light as they might have been
It's a very clear shot though, even in the downloaded version there is very little grainyness

lol. I'm surprised someone didn't mention that crappy cardboard before you did. I did begin using a penny and was shooting at a lower angle but because I was using a desk lamp and an LED flashlight(in hand) for my lighting, coupled with the spider wouldn't pause at all AND the lense weighs a ton, I was lucky enough to nail this shot down. I tried lighting the penny shots in Canon Professional, but wasn't happy with the result. This happened to be one of a few that I didn't have to lighten at all. My aim of the flashlight was dead on and I was at the right focal distance since I had it manual stuck on macro. It's funny but I never think of my background with these. I usually shot landscapes. I do however still have it in a bottle and I thought it was dead but it's got to be molting. Maybe I can snag a few penny shots before it loses it's size.. because you've got to see how big this thing is for just a small house spider. Thanks for the comments. Like my other page?

Oooh, I see. Yeah, alot of things need to go right to get a good clear, focused, lit, shot like that. lol.
I'm about to PS and post another picture or few of a spider I found last night, I tried to take pictures but it was scared of my camera, so I captured it in a plsic cup, set the cup down, and got distrasted by my friends online and forgot that the little guy was right next to my heater... so afew hours later I got up and kicked over the cup and a half dead spider rolled out... I got pictures of it though... heh
Yes, I do, you've got some nice pictures, but with them being soo big, even with such a good camera/lense you can see alot of grainyness in some of them, and having a picture be nearly three times bigger than your screen makes it kinda annoying; having to scrole to see the whole thing...

I hear ya. I no longer do it that way. I submit the option of download but make them 1024 by 768 normal full-size. I had alot of people digging the nice large size, but back then you couldn't allow them to be able to get the full size any other way. As for my little friend.. it hasn't moved and now I'm wondering whether it is truly going to molt or if it's just dead. Rather wierd though, the fact that it doesn't have the traditional folded/crossed legged dead look.

Yep, as soon as I saw the thumbnail, I knew it was a Dysdera crocata, or Woodlouse Hunter. They've sure got some impressive chelicerae! They're harmless to humans, even though a bite would probably hurt due to the huge size of the fangs. It's odd to see one indoors, though, since they're usually found underneath old logs or on the trunks of trees, the same places you find "rolly-pollies", their only food source.

Wow. That's weird. I'm in the city. The three prior to this one were when I was living along a creek. That might have something to do with it. This one was in a big, century old house that had laid dormant for at least a year. This has been the only one out of the four that wasn't extremely aggressive toward any contact. In fact this one was very cowardly. Strange. I'm glad someone knew what kind these were. I was originally going to ask while posting this but stumbled onto the correct info on a search engine. Hey, thanks for your info and comments.

If I saw that in the home of any relative...I would run, and never return @_@ Though I can't tell how large it is, the creep factor is enough for me.
For someone who despises arachnids, I sure have been commenting on a lot of pics of them lately!
Still, great shot, lots of detail

Thank you. I always found spiders fascinating and rather a helpfull aid along with bats to regulate the insect population. It's too bad they have to be so darn hideous. It's like the opposite argument toward mice and squirrels. Destructive pests, yet as cute as can be. Oh well.. that's mother nature for ya. Thanks for your comments.

I agree! >w<...they're icky but...amazing creatures. And then we have the cute, fluffy things that bite and pee on us (like my cat!)
By the way, what did you do with it?

lol.. sorry about the cat. The spider's still inside the bottle I used to capture and contain it with. I wanted to try another shoot with it, but two nights ago while checking on it, I noticed it wasn't really moving much. I didn't bother to move the bottle until the next morning when it rolled around lifeless. The strange thing was that it didn't have the normal dead spider look. It just looked as though it were asleep or something. A friend said maybe it's molting, however it's been a few days and nothing's gone on, so I think it could be a goner. I'll give it a few more days before I jiggle the nozzle after commencing it's final voyage.

Perhaps with it's huge fangs. But I don't think people will really bother to believe my survival story upon how the necklace was made.
