Description
Step one: Never ignore your instincts. Was that movement at the corner of your eye? Maybe you heard something out your window? Someone behind you sounds like they're walking a little too quickly for your comfort...
When something inside you is telling you something is wrong, chances are, something is. Lets call this our survival instinct. Animals have them, and they don't ignore them. They act. The difference with us humans is that we doubt ourselves. We tell ourselves we're being paranoid, that it was nothing. “It was just the wind”, “It was probably an animal”, or, everyone's favorite: “It was just my imagination.”
Eventually, it comes to a point you're in denial. You think that if you ignore it and pretend it's not there, then it'll go away. You've given your enemy the upper hand.
Step two: Don't give in to paranoia.
With step one in mind, it's important not to become constantly afraid. That fear and paranoia only feeds what it is you're afraid of. You start to see things that aren't really there, your fear growing and growing until you're nearly mad with it. Your enemy feeds off from that fear, and does whatever they, or it, can to increase it.
Step three: Don't let fear consume you.
Even though fear can sometimes save us, it can also betray us. When you give in to fear, you're driven senseless. You don't think clearly, you do whatever it is your instinct tells you. Usually, one of three things can happen: you thrash around madly, hitting anything within reach. You run away as fast as you can in any direction, just as long as it's far away from where you were. Or, you freeze, standing perfectly still, literally frozen in terror.
When you're afraid, you need to keep yourself calm enough to stay in control. To plan an escape route, a way to stall your enemy, then run when you have the chance. When you do get that chance, obviously running deep into the woods is a huge no-no. Your best chance is running toward civilization, to groups of people. Whatever is chasing you will likely be discouraged and give up. But sometimes, running may not even be an option. In fact, sometimes it's the worst idea. You're probably one of those people sitting through the movie thinking: why doesn't that girl just turn around and kick the guy in the nuts?! That's what I'd do!
This would be one of those times to test that theory. When you're running, and it doesn't look like you'll make it, your best chance of survival may be to stop and turn around. Face your enemy. Who knows, this might throw them off guard. They could be all bark and no bite. Then throw yourself at them with everything you've got; blind them, break their leg, anything to give yourself an advantage and make it out alive. In the wild, wolves don't go after prey that fight back, or the strongest of the herd. Again, this could discourage whatever it is that's after you, and make them go away. Or, at the very least, the nightmare will be short, and ended quickly.
Now, the purpose of this writing is to, say, “prepare you”. We're afraid of something out there, aren't we? Whether it's the dark of the unknown, or a real, living person who wishes to harm you, there are a number of mistakes made that are common in these scary movies and stories you watch or listen to, some of which are true. These steps were made in hopes of fixing them, and keep you from repeating them.
There's just one last step to go over. Don't worry, it's an easy one.
Step four: Look behind you.

Hehehe.
Oh, really? You can't have something come up from behind you while you're against a wall?
In the dark
THEY COME
In the light
THEY COME
Down the halls
THEY COME
From the walls
THEY COME
Hello there,
THEY CAME
Really old one, I wrote it in elementary school, and now it gets tagged on school walls.

You know I clicked on this because there is a few creepypastas that scare the living daylights outta me- Jeff the Killer being the main one, literally all it takes is someone saying his name and I can't sleep for days on end - and this had me going. I was like "yeah...yeah I can take these evil creatures on! I'm a big brave lion! Yeah!" Then I got to step four.... And I was like "NOPENOPENOPENOPENOPE" But besides that, this really built me up, making me feel brave and courageous like a lion and then made me feel helpless and terrified like a tiny mouse. It doesn't help that I'm sitting in a pitch black room either!! Great little tale you have here! I love it and you can bet I'll be making all my friends read it!

Yeah.... That Jeff The Killer on literally gave me nightmares for weeks. When I went to bed one night, I had a really disturbing nightmare about it, woke up IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT in PITCH BLACK, looked around and didn't sleep for the rest of the night. I was to afraid he would walk into my room and kill me in my sleep. Heh... the imagination can be our downfall sometimes, can't it?

You've got that right; imagination can be the greatest asset for an artist or a writer, heck even for certain careers. But it's very much like a double edged sword. Its reassuring to hear that that picture didnt just give me nightmares though! Oh lord...that must have been a truly terrifying experience! Hopefully you're over that fear now too though, right? I really hope you don't still get nightmares from it at least!
When I first saw his picture years ago, I hadn't slept in about three days. A close friend of mine sent me a link saying it was for a game, and the link even had the games title in it. When I clicked on it, I got a flashing picture with this really disturbing sound added onto it of Jeff. Seeing as how I hadn't slept in a few days, after I got over the initial mini heart attack, my mind started playing tricks on me and caused me to start seeing him all over my apartment while I was home alone...Im over it now of course but I'll never forget how terrifying that experience was!

I'm not COMPLETELY over that fear yet. Mainly because I get very paranoid sometimes. I don't have nightmares like that anymore, but I'm still afraid of the dark. It's like, 1:46am for me, so it's pitch black and I'm on a sofa in my living room with the door behind me and a pair of French doors ( doors with windows on them ) on the other side of the room and I'm pretty paranoid... I wish it was day now.

Oh...Im really sorry to hear! Its alright, I know the feeling all too well...and if it makes you feel any better, I'm still afraid of the dark and I'll be turning twenty two in just a couple of weeks. I don't know if I can be of much help but I'll try....
Have you thought about sleeping with a light of some kind on? Even just a hallway light or getting like a small item that lights up like an ornament with a glowing bottom or something?
Seeing as my bedroom connects onto the bathroom, I usually leave the bathroom light on and the door slightly ajar with something in the way to stop it from closing. Not only that, but I sleep with an item that represents security to me. It makes it a little easier not only to fall asleep but to stop me from panicking when I wake up during the early hours. If you can do either, give it a try. It might help you more than you may think.
As for the french doors, is there a possibility you could put a curtain over them to cover them up during the night? I have french doors for my backdoors and for my bedroom doors and both are covered with curtains. It makes it a little less scary to walk past them during the night. But there's still the times when I walk past a window and see my own reflection and almost go into cardiac arrest xDD
I hope this has helped at least a little!

Yeah, to be honest I can't sleep when it's really dark and there are no lights. Maybe, for the French doors problem I should stop sleeping downstairs. As for me sleeping upstairs, I can't stand the fact that I face away from the door when I sleep, because I'd prefer to be able to see the door. It would also help if I hadn't done a few things when I was six.. You know, being the rebel I am, I did some pretty stupid stuff that has possibly had an effect on me ever since. In fact, I'll tell you what I did. I watched people play horror games. I literally wrote in a notebook I had when I was six: I don't like: .EXE games, Slendytubbies and other horror games. May I note it was awfully spelt. I've been afraid of stuff like that ever since. Maybe I should warn my kids ( if I ever have any ) of the danger of the internet. Do you agree?

Well then, perhaps investing in a light of some kind is for the best. If you're worried about using too much power, get one that takes triple A batteries or double. You'll burn through them, trust me but its better than adding additional costs onto the power bills every few months. I see...I understand that, even though Im the opposite for whatever reason. Well have you thought about maybe moving the bed/couch whatever it is you sleep in the upstairs area so you can face the door while you sleep? If that's something you can do?
Ahh....I see. Yeah, that'll do it to anyone. Believe me, I grew up raised on horror games as well like Resident Evil and Silent Hill- thanks mum- and spying around corners to watch scary movies even though they gave me bad dreams and let me tell you, that had a massive effect on me growing up too. Ontop of that, my older brother certainly didnt help when he'd tell me things like "the devil lived at the end of our hallway" and the like. But Ive overcome that now during my young adult years and personally, I cant get enough of it now. Its alright, you were only six after all. We aren't born perfect, now are we? Trust me, Im sure this is something you'll overcome as you get older.
Well....depending on their age, you can shield them from viewing such sites and personally, I believe children should only be allowed on the internet once they can differentiate between whats real and whats fake, or else we'll have more kids out there running around believing in Slenderman, Sonic.exe or whatever other creepypasta character they find first. I say give them room to explore and flourish on their own but always keep a watchful eye on them to make sure they aren't looking at content you dont want them to see. And if they ever come to you discussing a horror based character they've come across on the internet, reassure them its not real and it cant hurt them before taking them and doing something they really enjoy, like watching a movie and having ice cream to take their mind off it and keep them away from the internet for the rest of the day. Im not a parent myself nor will I ever be but thats what I do with my younger brother and it seems to work like a charm.
