Gentle sunlight streamed down from between the thick, leafy forest canopy and sprinkled a little, ocean blue kukuri with patches and dots of light. A gentle breeze ruffled the lighter silken fur lining his neck and belly. Butterflies were fluttering here and there, and some even stood on his nose and tickled him. He felt a sneeze coming on.
Then he ran.
He jumped over fallen logs and ducked under the dry tree legs. The floor was full of flowers, some were small, like the cherries they used to have for dinner. While others were big, like the colour of the sky before night came. But these weren’t the flowers he was looking for. His feet thump thumped on the ground and his heart thump thumped in his chest. He rushed down a bend near a little pond and turned left at the red patch.
He was going to find the special purple flower for his Ma. His small rabbit friend, with the big ears and fluffy tail, had told him that they were found deep in the woods. His Ma had forbidden him to go here but if the small rabbit could go there, he could too.
The small rabbit was the only small friend that talked to him. He knew that the other small friends were scared of him. But he didn’t understand why. His Ma had told him that he was big and small things were afraid of big things but he wasn’t that big. He had seen bigger friends. Some even huge, like the golden one who used to hide whenever he saw him. Maybe that big friend was scared of small friends. That was strange though. Cause usually big friends weren’t scared of anything.
He ran and he ran and he ran. As fast as his little legs could take him. As fast as his little friend. His mom said that it was a good thing. Especially now, since he had to find food for both himself and Ma. He usually made do with the plants and berries outside their cave. He saved some for Ma too. But she slept a lot. Some days she didn’t even wake up to eat. And on the days she did , she got all huffy and breathy and tired. It made Behr sad. Ma liked strawberries because she looked like them but now she couldn't even get up and eat those.
He remembered the time when his Ma was more awake. She used to give him baths under the rushing waterfall and they used to look at the small twinkling dots of lights in the night. Sometimes they even used to catch them on the ground. He was scared of them at first and they made his chest feel uncomfortable but Ma had told him that they were just in the sky, small and shining. It was nothing to be scared of. They were watching over him and keeping him safe. They then used to go to sleep under the open sky, those lights watching over them and slowly he had begun to accept them and then eventually he came to love them.
It made him sad to see her sad, so he tried his best to make her happy. And one of those ways was to find the purple flower. Ma had said that she liked purple . So he was going to find a purple flower.
He wasn’t looking where he was going. His foot got stuck in a tree root and with a jolt he fell face first into a small stream. Quickly he got back up ready to go again and looked around. But then he felt the water on his fur. It was wet and muddy now. Ma wouldn’t like that. He tried to rub some of it away but it didn’t help. Just made it worse. Hopefully Ma didn’t notice.
The stream twinkled with the lights rays. It was surrounded on both sides by tall grasses with some sort of brown fruit at the ends. They waved and danced with the wind. Frogs sung loudly, hidden in the ground. He would've loved to sit and admire their song but he was close to his destination. His small rabbit friend had told him that there would be some rocks to step on and make crossing the stream easier. He found them and crossed them carefully. His fur was wet and he didn’t need his feet getting wet too.
On the other side, there was a large meadow. The grass was short and a bright green. Flowers of so many colours and so many sizes were everywhere. He was sure there were so many that he couldn’t count them all. Butterflies looking like the rainbow fluttered everywhere. His favourite were the black ones which glittered blue And came out only in the night time. Numerous other flies and insects darted around. Probably they came here to drink the flower juice. Ma had told him that that was what the insects ate. He didn’t understand though. Flowers didn’t have any juice. Anyways, he hoped that the insects got alot of juice and filled their bellies.
In the middle of it all, was a tall and winding willow tree. The blue kukuri stepped through the verdant grass to get to it. Done carefully as to avoid stepping on any of the flowers. The sun was setting at this point and long shadows had begun to follow him on his quest. His heart started beating uncomfortably again but he had to get the flower. He was so close.
The willow tree in the meadow was old and big. It twisted and turned, with old wrinkly branches spreading in every direction. Thick vines dropped down and made a thick curtain separating the trunk from the rest of the world. Dense leaves spread from its top. Only some light passed through it. The light passed through the leaves and made stars on the ground. It looked as if there was a piece of night in the day and Behr loved it. He felt safe there.
He carefully pushed apart one of the vines and headed to the trunk. It’s surface was hard and rough, stinging his hands. There was a large hole in one side which he and Ma used to come and sleep on nights when it was too hot to sleep in their cave. Curling up together in the cool shadows. It was smooth and soft, unlike the outside. And in the hollow of the trunk there grew the flower he was looking for.
He jumped into the hollow and observed the flower. It wasn’t one big flower but instead it was clusters of small purple flowers all arranged into one conical shape. Numerous small filaments protruded and touched his nose when he bent down to smell it.
He plucked the small flower and held it delicately between his teeth so as to not damage it. Then he looked around, his heart felt heavy despite the coolness of the hollow. The shadows seemed scary. He wondered when his mom and him would be able to sleep in it again. He ran his hand one last time over the old wood. Then a sense of urgency gripped him. He had to get back home .
This time he ran without thinking. Something in his heart told him that his ma was calling out to him. He dashed through the vines and the meadow grass. He leaped over the tree roots and splashed through the stream . His heart was thumping but this time it was different. Something was wrong. Something was different The sun was setting, the sky turning dark. The shadows were getting longer and darker and he was scared.
His heart calmed a little bit when he reached their cave. Familiar flowers and muddy leaves sticking to the rocks.
“MA? ” he called out.
A yellow shadow moved and Behr rushed into the cave he called his home.
