Description
This piece is based off of a favorite pair of shorts: Every Dog's Guide to Home Safety/The Playground. This kinetic duo was created by Les Drew, an NFB creator who has used a few distinct styles in his work. These shorts were released in '86 and '91 respectively. The main story centers around Wally, a certified safety dog, as he goes through great pains (literally) to keep his family safe despite their oblivious nature. Sequentially, Home Safety occurs at the beginning of the "arc" due to the plot motivation of adopting a dog to look good for the boss. Despite outcry that Wally will return to the pound at the end of the film, he appears to have aged w/ the family he saved in the first short.
I feel like the eclectic animation style really draws us into the conflict. It expresses the hare-brained and breakneck pace of the household very well. It seems that everything squashes and stretches which conveys a certain silly tone, despite having most of the slapstick affect the household members. Wally's inner narration also moves at a speedy pace; you'd have to keep a sharp and constant eye on both shorts to fully understand it. Wally's quick action is juxtaposed quite strongly with the husband's boisterous bellowing to create an odd feeling; in the end, you'd always root for the squash and stretch Safety Dog. A very stimulating piece that deserves your full attention and (hopefully) at the end, your full praise.

Every day, I'll share a link to the official home of the shorts at nfb.ca; Most of these shorts are probably available on Youtube as well, but I'm not sure whether or not it would be right to give it. If you can't find it, note me and I'll give you a link. So, three asterisks(***) will denote Youtube availability. Four(****) means it's coming straight from NFB's official channel. While, today's short is not featured, some of the selection have been featured in the Cartoon Network anthology, Oh Canada! I will use the code @CN to convey such a message. Today, you'll get two again. The second film is only officially available under subscription,so just confirming that it is also on YT.
