“Thank you for meeting with us,” The stablehand, Jax, was walking quickly as he talked. Almost too quickly. Buck was practically running behind him, holding his mom’s hand to keep pace.

“we’ve had a lot going on this month, y’know, with all the events and the training, and only *now* the barn manager wants to sell Fabian, it’s a whole thing.” He finished, holding a clipboard close to his chest as another horse and rider passed quickly. He flicked his hand towards his forehead as they left. “You see what I mean?” he said, exasperated.

To the left of them was a paved road the rider was following, and Buck stared for a little too long to make sure they didn’t go faster than a trot until they were on soft ground. The road forked into another barn, surrounded with round pens and empty turnout paddocks. There was a jumping arena that was in use, and Buck was briefly mesmerized by how the horse seemed to fly.

To the right of them was the stable entrance, loud with farriers and riders. Nails rang in Buck’s ears, the constant hoofsteps, which usually didn’t bother him, made him antsy. Jax’s voice was loud and clear and a little too high pitched, and he flung his clipboard wildly as he spoke. His barn was never this loud.

Buck looked up at his mom with worry in his eyes, and he started fidgeting on his shirt with his free hand. “I’m sorry I forgot your braiding toy at home, sweetheart, but I promise it’ll be worth it,” Eli held his hand a little tighter.

“How old’s your boy?” Jax asked, starting to walk again, though his pace was slower now that he was trying to hold conversation.

“He’s thirteen!” Eli said. “He’s my perfect little boy, and he’s had an interest in horses ever since he opened his eyes.” she laughed. “I’m here to surprise him, more or less. I’ve been looking around a few barns now, but funnily enough, no one’s selling greenies.” Jax almost barked a laugh. “Where are you looking that won’t sell greenies?”

“Clearly not the right places,” Eli stated, trying to ignore how Jax’s response made her feel. “If we can bring this boy home though, it’ll be worth it.”

Jax hitched a right, onto a pale dirt road that lead up to the leisure pastures. They were huge, by Buck’s known standards. A single pasture held at least fifteen acres here, but they passed fence after fence. Buck got excited at the size of this place. Maybe, he thought, when his anxiety gets better, he’ll volunteer here.

The road ended with a smaller barn, though definitely not *small*. It housed a baler, a riding mower, several kinds of tractors, and wagons. On the wall was a small selection of halters and leads. Jax grabbed a weird toned yellow one, and motioned behind the barn.

“Fabian’s in our display pasture, you could say.” Buck and his mom looked at each other for a moment, but followed him anyway.

Behind the barn was, indeed, a pasture. No larger than an acre, lined with ‘FOR SALE’ along the front, facing the completely empty road. Yeah, it’s a good thing they posted online.

What was in the pasture, though, was much more important. Buck let go of his mom’s hand and walked cautiously up to the fence.

“This is Fable’s Call, his stable name is Fabian,” he said, clapping his hands, spooking the child and the horse simultaneously. Eli glared at him.

Fabian was standing in the corner closest to the barn, and farthest from the road. After his spook wore off, he took a few steps forward, his ears perked.

Jax set his clipboard on the top of a fencepost and opened the gate. “Let me get him, then I’ll let you in.” he said to Buck.

He rocked back and forth onto his toes excitedly, never taking his eyes off the horse. A soft black, long maned gelding. Black horses were always his favorite.

Jax clipped the halter onto him and walked at his standard pace back to Buck. Fabian almost had to trot. Eli suddenly felt validated, her breathing still recovering from following him. He must have calves of steel.

He opened the gate for Buck to come in, and Eli could tell he was doing his best to restrain flapping his hands. Despite the awkward shade of yellow, it looked quite nice on Fabian.

Fabian lowered his head, and buck held out the back of his hand so he could smell him. The gelding nickered, and Jax laughed and pat his withers. “He likes you! I’ve never seen him nicker after getting so close to someone.”

Buck looked at his mom quickly, before rocking back on his toes. He laughed, an awkward, stuttery laugh, but this was the happiest Eli’s ever seen him. Buck put both of his hands on the gelding’s soft snout, and he wriggled his lips in return.

Buck was visibly excited, still rocking on his feet as he pet Fabian’s face. He traveled his hands along his neck, which was shaven smooth. He explored these textures for a moment, rubbing his neck in every direction before moving on.

The few horses at his barn were practically titans at seventeen hands, and Buck thought they were too tall. Their hooves were too big, their manes too coarse. Fabian, though, was maybe fifteen hands, if Buck had to guess. The perfect height for him.

Fabian turned his head to look at Buck as he pet him along his body, and Buck put pressure on his back and withers. He looked at Jax and pat Fabian’s back again, but Jax just looked at his mom, his eyebrow raised. “He wants to sit on him,” she answered his wordless question.

“Oh! Jax exclaimed, grabbing his clipboard off of the post. “I don’t see why not.” He made a quick note on his paper while Buck mounted, confident after his time with draft horses.

Fabian’s ears flicked back for a moment and his head straightened out, and Buck heard his tail flick a few times, but he stood still.

He patted Fabian’s neck started to brush his mane with his fingers, and he slowly started to phase out the world around him. All that mattered was this gelding.

He took his mane in his fingers, playing with the wavy texture.

Fabian’s ears were pointed back, paying close attention to the child on his back.

Buck leaned forward and started to part his mane into sections, slowly and deliberately braiding his mane. He heard his mom’s voice, and though she was right next to him, she sounded a mile away.
