Description
I always thought it was your taste
that kept me going:
strawberries and lemons,
sweet and sour.

But then the seeds fell out of the lemon
and sour turned to bitter
and the sweet just didn't linger
anymore.

I tried to wash my mouth out with
that clean, minty toothpaste I so loved -
but citrus and mint just
don't mix well at all.

You knew that the taste was growing old
so you squeezed out what was left of you
but all that came from it was a sickly mush,
a combination of what could have been.

And so now I wait
two bad tastes in my mouth,
knowing I tried too hard
to swallow that lemon.
