This is an animated PNG! Looks like you gotta click to zoom it before it plays. If it's still not animated for you, it's because your browser doesn't support them.

Nicolai continued deeper into the temple, and the ground dropped into a steep slide that they rode down into a massive cavern. Many trickles of water made their way into their track, forming a slowly growing stream.
Nicolai climbed atop a leaf that was caught in the current, content to let it take them to wherever they needed to be. The stream continued to build, as did the bodies of water that merged with the way ahead.
A particularly large waterway was joining this one up ahead. As they approached, they could smell the salt in the air. The plant life changed drastically after that point, shifting to primarily grasses and succulents that survived better around brackish waters. Nicolai pondered that some things would do well to not mix so readily.
They found themself dwelling on their boundary. They had found their place in the university as a helpful spirit, quietly tending to things more easily overlooked and greasing the wheels where they could. By all means, this was what they thought to be a satisfactory existence, but there was a creeping malaise they could never quite shake. It felt as though there was a kind of pressure building up within them, that no amount of busywork nor quiet solitude could shake.
Leaving their boundary granted temporary relief, but they rarely indulged in this. As it were they would always have to return eventually, and Nicolai considered it wasteful to invest themself in something they could not keep.
This was all something that they took care not to dwell on. It unnerved them deeply that such thoughts and feelings were being pulled to the surface here and now.
They made their way to the end of the space, where the large river that had formed by then dropped off into a large hole in the woody ground. Hopping off their leaf right before the drop, they passed over the pit and instead exited through a thick brass archway engraved with images of esk.

I should probably actually mention that this is using the Let's Play! temple challenge, hence the talksprites and the video game camera angle. I think the pixel art was the most fun part of it, but that's probably because the rest of it was Big and Intimidating. Actually figuring out how to render the animation was a mess. I'm glad it was just text and sprites because my first method failed and I had to re-do it all in another program lol.
