Personality
| +Honest | +Observant | +Selfless | =Blunt | -Callous | -Insecure | -Pessimistic |
At first glance, Oliver really isn't that notable. The teen is quiet and timid, looking completely insecure and downright uncomfortable in his own skin. He's kind enough, the type of friend who will know exactly what present you'd love, but for the most part he keeps to himself. However, the side of himself that the world sees is anything but the real deal. Truthfully, years of bullying and harassment have left him cynical and callous, not really caring for other people's feelings. He never intends to hurt anyone's feelings of course, but he's so blasΓ© about it all that one might think that was his intent. At the very least, you know that Oliver will be completely honest with you.
For his friends, Oliver is completely selfless. He's constantly putting the needs of others before his own, stubbornly refusing help even if he really and truly needs it. He's also observant, and finds himself sensitive to their needs, though he unfortunately falls short when it comes to recognizing his own. The teen is hardworking, but often overdoes it and ends up exhausting himself, all in the name of proving to everyone that he's not useless... even if nobody really thinks that of him. Oliver can't help but to see the worst side of things and himself in all situations, a pessimist through and through. He won't hesitate to point out the truth to others in a very blunt manner either. But at the end of the day, really he's just an overly anxious kid trying to find a place where he can finally belong.
History
The very first thing Oliver learned in life was that there are no happy endings.
Oliver was abandoned at his father's doorstep shortly after birth, his mother fearing cruel remarks and disownment from her family. Nobody had wanted him to exist, but here he was anyway. Right from the very start, home life wasn't easy on him. With three older half-siblings, Oliver often found himself fighting for the attention of his parents. Additionally, the unwanted strain he'd put on his father's marriage was abundantly clear. Life was uncertain, with the threat of being put up for adoption or straight up abandoned held over his head at every conceivable chance. Fighting between his father and his stepmom was constant. And when things went south, Oliver was always the scapegoat. It scarred the child deeply, and his life was lived in constant stress and fear.
School life wasn't any easier. His quiet nature, people-pleasing attitude, and odd appearance made him the easiest target for bullying in the school playground. Insults were hurled at him as commonly as rocks. Time and again, he was called a freak, he was told to crawl back into the sewers, his peers rejected him and made it clear that he didn't belong anywhere. There were few things Oliver could rely upon for comfort. One of these things was music. Plunking out little ditties on the music room's piano brought color and joy into the boy's life, and making his music teacher smile in awe always lit a smile upon his own face. Another was his older brother. Though they were four years apart, the two were close and spent a great deal of time together, working on little robots or other mechanical things. Though it was small, the love and validation Oliver received was more than enough to keep him going.
And then, when he was twelve years old, his parents divorced. It wasn't a surprise to anyone, of course. As Oliver had grown, the toxic atmosphere of home and the fighting between his parents had grown as well. After a long and messy custody battle, Oliver's father was stuck with him while his stepmom received full custody of his three siblings. The two were kicked to the curb, and they moved away for a fresh start in Rio Tokiyaki.
Oliver was forced to stray from his budding music career as he worked all the chores around the house, while his father worked around the clock to keep the two afloat. Even after he grew older and found a job of his own, their two paychecks were only barely enough for them to get by. They barely even had enough money for food some days, opting for cup ramen over an actual meal. Worst of all, they were forced to sell most of the teen's instruments to pay the bills, as much as it pained Oliver to see.
Things carried on like this for years, tension bubbling under the surface, until it finally exploded. On his eighteenth birthday, Oliver had had enough. He was done being pushed around, stepped on, degraded and blamed for every little thing. He got into a fight with his father, the first time in his life that he'd ever tried standing up for himself. It didn't end well. No longer feeling safe in his own home, Oliver quickly and quietly gathered up as many of his belongings as he could, before leaving his father behind. He was done. With nowhere else to go, Oliver moved in with his older brother.
From there, life only seemed to improve. The hybrid began to emerge from his shell, slowly yet surely. He joined clubs, he made friends, and began to trust people more. Oliver's brand quickly rose in popularity to his surprise, enough for him to be able to afford a new store with room for him to live above it. Things were looking up, and for the first time in his life, Oliver began to believe that maybe happiness wasn't such a far reach after all.
