Possibly one of my best portraits to date, and also one that fills me with upset and at times, mild revulsion.

She's a girl I know at University, and a person who I get on rather well with there and recently started fancying quite a lot. Rather than keeping a secret I thought it was better to just out with it right away, and she handled it superbly. This was painted partly to give me some practise at doing skin, and partly since it looked like she was going to have a dull Christmas and so this might cheer her up.

She didn't seem particularly grateful, and she hasn't bothered to talk to me in a week and a half despite her knowing I care about her quite a lot, and knowing full well I wanted to see her over the holiday.

As a painting exercise it was a success, as an emotional exercise, an absolute failure.
