Description
This image is dedicated to Nora, and forms part of the βBetween Friends Galleryβ. The gallery celebrates the relationship between Canada and the United States. Nora's family is a significant piece of that history. The car is located on Nora's farm in North Dakota. Her father, a Norwegian immigrant moved from the US to Canada in 1903 where he made significant contributions. They returned to the US in 1909, soon after which Nora was born in 1912. Nora lived in a family of 11 children. She was confirmed in Deer Creek Canada (which, as a carpenter, her father helped to build). Her Uncle and Grandmother are buried in Canada in the Norwegian Cemetery across the road from land her grandfather farmed.
Nora attended school in a building that was initially located close to the border, but later was moved a mile south of the line. The church was also located in the same area as the school. It too was moved at about the same time. She remembers that children attended school from both sides of the border and she had friends in Canada that she visited regularly.
She remembers that while life was hard, it was in some ways better because they had time to go and visit people. "Relationships were a priority to the people in those days" she says. "We did not have any means of transportation, and roads were scarce, so we walked when we went places." She comments that "time was not as fast as it is now".
The international line was not as definitive as it is today. In her youth, while the line was recognized as being in place, there was no real thought given to it in terms of security, and certainly no port of entry was used. When they wanted to visit friends and family, they simply walked across.

What a wonderful find, both Nora and this gorgeous capture. I love the red and white building in the background, so new and bright, but still with it's modern lines it only highlights the beauty of the classic strength in the foreground. Very nice.

thanks.
Initially I contemplated removing the building, but then I thought that the contrast added interest so i left it.

Welcome. I'm glad you left the building, even if you had removed it, this worthy subject would still be as strong. A symbolic voice that speaks of a better time when things were built to last longer than 3-5 years.

that is so true....for just about everything that I own, i wonder when it is going to wear out. years ago I never felt that way. It is especially true of computers and electronic stuff.

It is good to know that people like the comments. It takes a lot of time and digging, but I really like doing it. So knowing that people like it just encourages me to try to dig up mare.

now that is cool. I like languages, and have studied 5 or 6 of them. Don't know any of them well, but it helps one to understand how other people see things.

I am impressed.
I have studied German in an immersion situation. I was dreaming in German at the end but that was in 1982. I have a degree in Theology which required a language so i studied Koine Greek. Quite different from modern Greek, but interesting. Beyond that I have concentrated on native languages in the area where I live Salteaux, Sioux, Cree. But even these were 20 years ago, so most has been lost.

be careful there...bosses daughter and all....lol...
thanks kevin....I kind of thought my ears were itching yesterday...now I know why.
Took Orca for a walk (again as usual) found a new log cabin, it must be 100 years old or more. I will have to do the research now...if I can...sometimes it is just not possible.
So what do you think of Version 6

i'm queer, so i'm the safest person in the world to be hangin wiv the boss's daughter! hehehe.
cool name for a dog -- orca. unless you're walking a killer whale -- in that case, i def gotta see pix of THAT!

WayneBenedet In reply to jevinart [2008-07-11 19:21:40 +0000 UTC]
lol....
You are right...
Orca is named after the killer whale because of his colour....but he is retro...killer whales are black with white markings..he is white with black makings. Named by his owner...my son. Weird thing that...Daniel owns the dog...but the dog owns me. I have to be careful not to call him my dog when DB is around...he gets annoyed. To keep it all straight, I refer to the dog as my furry boy. So I guess I have 3 boys, one is furry...and I can't really say how I refer to the other two... lol.
have a good weekend

i know! If you get a new shiny Monaro, everyones like "ooh, he's got that new car" but the attractiveness dies in 2 years and it becomes an old model, but if you get a classic, it will always be "hey, he's got that awesome comby!"

Depends, it has to have been a really popular vintage or have showed up in a movie.
