The Chromite is the first successful mecha deployed by the Union, existing as a Generation-2.5 and eventually Generation-3 model.

The success of mecha used by anti-Union forces took their common adversary by surprise. Despite the Union military scoffing the idea by believing the common flaws of large mecha, they hardly had anything when their enemies flattened out said problems and made successful runs against their military forces. Their latest previous models, the R-4 Copper and R-5 Titan were as they had limited usage, earning them the title "Flopnick of the Robot Age." After a few years, spearheaded by the Babel Corporation and Galaxia, the Union's defense contractors and technology corporations caught up to create a much more improved model.

The XR-7B Chromite, feared as the "Blue Raptor" by anti-Union forces for its navy blue/army green color scheme, became the newest answer for the Union to combat their enemies' older models. Rumored to be based on a captured Courant unit, its main powerplant uses two Direct Carbon Fuel Cell Turboengine that provides far more thrust than a standard jet engine; the companies involve state are far cleaner as well, though this is debatable. Two other key elements were the Diamond Composite Armor, made in a region within the Midwest of the Central States, and the Tissue Cables made of composite materials instead of mere alloys. A combination of these technologies not only makes the Chromite much lighter and faster under dry weight but also more agile, energy-efficient, and durable to the point not even anti-tank small arms can scratch it.

While armed with two 15mm machineguns to deal with enemy personnel and missiles, the Chromite's armament is solely for combatting armored vehicles and especially other mecha. Made by a company known for its Indonesian origin, the model adopts a folding karambit that can also deploy into a utility knife for cutting through tank armor and Tissue Cables. Its Handcannons were made for light vehicles while the M64 is made for taking out targets from a long-range. The latter weapon is speculated to be based on older primary rifles used in the Union's history, preferring range and accuracy over stopping power, thus require multiple shots to take down an armored vehicle or mecha.

The first Chromite was deployed to suppress unrest that occurred after Revenant's attack in the Union-occupied regions of Zhongguo and the coup from Irvine's Private Security Firm. While its later success led to the mass-produced and official designated R-6 model, these were customized under a universal design, with one clear instance being those used by the Patriot Squad. As the mecha technology progressed, several new models would be made from this universal design to incorporate these features, including the XR-8/R-7 Staurolite and more mobile R-8 Bauxite.
