There is evidence throughout history of warriors going into battle without any armour at all. The Romans reported occasions where the Celts would stand in battle entirely naked in an attempt to intimidate. Similarly, female warriors in South Africa and Asia may have worn revealing clothes to throw off their opposition.

What better a distraction than disgust or lust?

Mmh, interesting to know. Personally, I would still be very afraid to be hurt because of lack of protection. Even a piece of leather could help protect from small injuries, even if it won't stop a good sword blow.

I would agree. I think many of even the first-hand reports of this were romanticised for impact. I imagine the impracticality of it all is enough to convince even the most foolhardy of warriors - after all, their life is on the line. That said, it would make more sense if a group of bare warriors were to "preform" before a battle to deal a psychological blow to the opposition, then retreat to equip themselves and allow the more readied of them to fight.

That would make more sense. The only problem would be if the opposing army took advantage of that moment before they equipped themselves and attacked while they were still naked. But the point of the performance is to scare them so that they do not act, so as long as the enemy is easily intimidated or lacks a good leader, that could work.

What you don't realize is that she's wearing garter belt and thigh-high stockings or protection +2, therefore her seemingly naked, creamy thighs are relatively well protected

Not necessarily. lots of warriors in history wore very little to keep foreign materials out of wounds.

There's a massive artery running down there, only a nut-case would leave their thighs unprotected. But this is art not history. I like thighs.

Given the speed at which battles are fought, people aim for center of mass. This is why modern body armor mostly protects the torso. Also, remember the Greeks fought naked and Romans had very little leg protection overall.

BTW, this is great piece.

The Greeks did not fight naked, rather, they often depicted themselves in their art as fighting naked as an illustration and embodiment of the warrior-bravado. Almost as if saying, "we are such good fighters, that even without armor we are untouchable." Even the Spartans fought with full body armor, which is completely contrary to popular culture depictions (e.g.: 300).

Sources please. I will pull up mine and you'll pull up yours. Also, define full body armor. Are we talking about torso protection. Or complete covering of all parts? I will agree, there are many examples of leather strap armor used but I mostly see examples of that with calvary units and commanders. As far as I can tell, most units probably wore a simple tunic or robe. In regards to armor, cloth isn't much protection.

In other examples throughout history, we often see men-at-arms wearing torso protection but without much in the leg department. My point still stands, most attacks are directed at the torso, not the legs.

Yeah but keeping foreign materials out of wounds doesn't keep weapons away or protect them from getting wounded xDU

Indeed.
In movie fights, one can battle 2-10 opponents at the same time. In real life... you'd get killed. Documents highlight the saying about knights being the tanks of their own time - only a very skillful strike in the armor's weakest points would cause a wound to kill. Or, if you used a spiked warhammer (or a similar, penetrating heavy weapon) to break the armor ( and even so, the knight could kill you while you are stuck in the armor with your weapon).

lol... I've only seen that happening in Berserk (a manga) but not really in movies xD I've always imagined it more like in "Brave Heart" ... I think their fights are very realistic o3o

hahah, but you know what i mean: slayer of hundred men and so on, indeed, that's what I thought basically. It's always easy to power up your imaginary characters - but one shouldn't just mix it with reality But anyway, as in fantasy overalls - looks are worth more than being practical and effective.

Chaoharte In reply to Daeg-Niht [2011-04-06 11:14:19 +0000 UTC]

That would be the warrior's skill at evasion. Even fully clad in armor a person could have a limb chopped off.

Daeg-Niht In reply to Chaoharte [2011-04-07 03:25:53 +0000 UTC]

Ah, yes, there's that. Especially since less armor could mean better freedom of movement.

Yet I still think it's a bit foolish to go out into a battlefield with your thighs naked like that. Doesn't it get cold out?
