Description
Slide 3104 Building Design
Did you conduct any research before creating the backgrounds?
The entire team went on-location in Shibuya to get a feel of the town, and to provide the designers with reference material. We shot hundreds of photos of buildings, intersections and graffiti around the city.
What iconic elements of the setting did you focus on?
Depending on the map, we treated streets themselves and building signage as the focus of many scenes
Could you explain the reasons behind the locations that were chosen?
We were originally planning to use all of Greater Tokyo to create a variety of battles and scenery. We eventually settled on Shibuya where we can best explore the iconic elements of contemporary Tokyo, such as fashion and subculture. We believed we could express those concepts with better focus by limiting the setting to Shibuya.

I sketched out two charater designs already. one is a villain and one is a hero. but the dead line is so soon.

I think we're allowed to do any of the subjects (buildings with perspective, heroes, villains) but they haven't posted up the hero and villain concept art yet so I'm waiting for that. I think your best bet would be to just draw one (or two) of every subject since multiple submissions are allowed. It increases your chance of winning something.

I would not wait to long to see hero and villin concept art. We don't have much time to do this. And it could be a handful for some of us if we do it right.

yeah I was going to create a whole cast of characters(now I'm up to 5). and a background.... also they don't tell you what to put in the art that you submit though(like a bio of place or character).

I'm curious how this is the real thing. We might win prizes and get comments from the big guys, but how is it the real thing? I believe if it was the real thing they would be looking for someone to be like a intern or give a real prize to us besides the game and some DA stuff. Maybe they should give us a all paid round trip to their studio to have a personal tour of the place.

I don't understand, are we supposed to come up with a story? And are we entering just backgrounds or can we enter characters?

FerretJAcK In reply to 2dMenagerie [2008-04-06 09:21:25 +0000 UTC]
Its confusing on the story part. I don't know for sure if its suppose to be our own story or theirs. Best bet would be our own sense we don't know much about the games story.

I think there looking for a bit of eveything. Something you can add your two thoughts to. But mainly I think they want some new character ideas with a bit of background to them. And in return give you some helpful criticism from the people that draw and design Kingdom Hearst/Final Fantasy characters. And possibly win a free copy of the DS game if you win. ^.^ Is'nt that neat?

I've never played KH and am not very familiar with console games in general. The "angled perspective" you mentioned: Is it supposed to all lean to a particular side unless directly in front of you, or does it lean away? Or is it just this particular building?
It looks, from the pics, like all structures lean away from you as you get closer, the ones not directly in front towards the sides and the ones in front in the direction you are facing. (Radial lean, like vertical flower petals or something.) The bg pics in slide 1, however, seem to be pretty normal - more of a flat perspective. Are they older, or are buildings farther away supposed to be normal-looking?

Do you think it would be possible to upload any of the pictures that your team took so that we can have references as well? I would like to create something that looks like it does in the actual city. I live in Ohio so I don't have many references to anything Japanese.

Geez. This stuff is only inspirational for the minimum age group of the contest. What about the rest?
I'm disappointed in these screen shots. Surely Square Enix could have put together better, higher quality shots?

Well, they're just concepts aren't they? It's not so much the artwork that's meant to inspire us but the ideas that we can carry elsewhere I'm thinking.
Personally though, I'm not sure what exactly their asking for in regards of the contest, the announcement was pretty vague.

I'm close to the minimum age and this isn't inspirational.
I wish they had put together something better that we could get more out of. Come -on-, Square Enix!

Yikes. That makes it even worse!
As a professional who knows the the industry, all I can make out of this is that their production team has uber art block and needs some fresh ideas from the art community. These are guys who get paid handsomely to do their job and a free copy of the game plus some is definitely NOT worth my time for this, especially not worth the rush for any professional. Bear in mind that designers charge more per hour if the deadline is short.

And when I was looking at all of the legal stuff (that nobody usually reads), I'm not signing off all of my hard worked for ideas to Square Enix to not get any money or credit for it. As much as I love Square Enix, I also have school, and this just isn't happening.
.....not that I was planning on doing it in the first place xD
But that's how it goes in the industry? Awesome. .....maybe I should become a designer x'D

Eh, it ain't all that pretty inside. Being a designer might also entail plenty overtime hours... not good if you've got a family to run (like I do) hence I'm not into teaching (design). : P
If you can get a position as a creative DIREcTOr, so much the better. Those are the people who boss around all the designers and hardly ever get their hands on the computers themselves. Makes one wonder why they get paid so much - -" It's not like designers don't have better ideas...

SachiXhappiness In reply to TheAnimaster [2008-04-07 16:49:40 +0000 UTC]
........I can so do overtime @_@
I dunno, getting on the computer itself and working seems like it would be more fun than just bossing people around. Plus, I'd have to work up to that position, right? So wouldn't I need to have experience in that area first anyway?

TheAnimaster In reply to SachiXhappiness [2008-04-08 03:15:50 +0000 UTC]
You would. There was a time I thought working on a computer (the fastest macs around) would be a fun thing. The time came and I got my chance. For some reason it wasn't everything I had thought it to be, and I found myself yearning for better things. Not trying to turn you away from it though... just wish you luck and hope it turns out to be everything you think it to be. It could. I s'ose my university training is what got me down... instead of giving me more inspiration it only made things look and feel more like "work" instead of "fun"

Is there a specific colour scheme or mood in this contest that we should follow? (i.e. more surreal dream like qualities, near apocalyptic time, etc.)
or is it set on a regular city settings?
The background examples here show distorted buildings and simplified colours, seems like they are in the early stages of development.
I'm hoping we can get a more detailed guidelines for us to follow
