Description
Here is a piece I did in a painting class. It's my first wet on wet oil painting! I learned a lot of techniques, and got to try some things I never have before! I might go and do another class later as well. For
What do you think of the composition? The rocks? The clouds? The waves? This isn't a piece I made out of my head, but what would you want to see on more of my other art from this piece? What could I use in a digital painting?

Ok, so you took art classes to kick my butt in oil painting huh ??????!!!!!
haha
I love the colours, but as all the above critiques said it doesn't look like nightfall, so I'll skip this part because you've already got a lot of tips and hints on it.
Moving on, I really like the water splashes in the wave.It makes it so alive.
The coomposition is great, but I think you need more colour in the clouds because I can see a part of the canavas.
As an overall, it's a great pic.
Keep it up
Finally, I'd like to give you a little hint.
Art classes are great and I don't offend them or anything, but I think that if you want to have your own style in oil painting you have got to practise a lot at home, drawing pictures from your very own imagination without a refrence.
This will help you develop a style of your own and it'll be recognisable in all your paintings.
Well that's all ^^
keep the good work

Thanks for the comments and feedback. The hardest thing in this class was doing the same picture as everyone else, but what my teacher told me, is that when you learn these skills in a painting that is already been done, you learn what to use in making your own pieces later. For example, I learned how to do rocks with a knife, and how to do foam on the tip of a wave. There's one class I want to take, where you bring in a picture of an animal and paint that. Everybody's turns out differently then.

Yeah, you maybe right
I guess I'll never know because I've never taken classes before.
I teach myself with the help of feedbacks.
We don't have good art classes here

I'm involved in DAcademy, put on by and where artists who know better techniques teach anybody with university level courses, as well as access to thousands of tutorials. [link] Here is the forum, and I'm on that frequently as well!

For the forum, you make an account, and then you can post stuff for other people to see and comment on. And even just browsing, you can see some of the lessons and teachers.

I made an account with the same name of my account on DA.
But I still can't get the hang of it ??? Is it the same as DA ???

Similar. I just posted something on there. Basically, it's like our forums at DA.

This is incredible. I can tell that the rocks are sharp and slick. I almost feel like I could jump into the waves! The lighting is gorgeous and the detail on the wave caps is amazing. I definitely want to see more painting from this--and I'm about to go check out out your gallery.

Unfortunately, that's my only oil painting! Everything else is a little different. The teacher told me, when she looked at my sketchbook, that I have a very cartoonistic style. I definitely want to take more classes like this though!

First I suggest changing the res so it's a bit smaller [but keep big one for download]- I'm having a really hard time taking it all in. That said, I am using a laptop.
I honestly don't have any crits for this, I can't do realism to save my ass. I adore the monochromatic colourscheme and the placement of the rocks makes for a nice middle-centred composition.
Maybe the clouds need a bit more definition/fluffyness but that could be to do with the type of clouds they are, I'm not sure.
Awesome. XD

Thanks! I don't get all the credit considering it was a class . Oh well, I have a thunderstorm rolling in, and the others' don't so haha! Just kidding, I learned a lot about cloud placement in that class, and I did mine a little off.

Yours is still yours though, you did it. All the same to me! The foam of the waves is flawless.

from
very nice, seems a dream scene
everything seems well done to me and you have a technique that i don't have so i have nothing to say in how you made it (^__^).
about the composition, maybe the clouds could be more on the right of the paint, the lines created by the mountain and the wave start from upper left and goes to down right so the right side seems a little empty. the clouds more on the right could have filled that empty a little and give a little more balance.
i like the rocks but they give me a strange sensation, like if they're made with a different style from the rest of the paint.
about the digital, there's a technique, i think used more with photoshop, which consist in make a monochromatic draw with shadows and lights and then add over flat transparent colors so i think that you can bring this monochromatic technique in digital drawing with good results.
bye (^__^)

Cool! I can't wait to try digital now! The rocks actually were made with a different technique! You use the knife and scrape the paint on, which gives them a sharper and more defined look. It was a totally new experience for me!

I do like this painting and always wanted to give oils or acrylic a go, especially after watching Bob. Heβd always make me cringe when heβd do a beautiful scene then cover it up with foreground trees, but always look fantastic in the end. What Iβd like to say is the sea lacks motion, as powerful as the wave looks. Not sure if itβs from a photo or not, but artistic licence may be needed. What Iβd suggest is to curl the wave more. As the water gets less towards the top it becomes transparent, especially as itβs lit from behind so giving it a lighter green colour would achieve this. Also the foam is to uniform. Usually a wave will brake from one end and roll along, so you get an increasing amount of fome as you go along the top. I do like this and hope you find my comments constructive.

Yep thanks! I totally did mess up on the wave (what I get for jumping the gun) and my teacher told me I should try some of the other paintings where you can actually see the eye of the wave, which isn't supposed to happen here. My wave is definitely too big!

This is really pretty! I love the way you did the waves and the seagulls! The rocks in the front remind me of Bob Ross' painting technique I always wanted to try oil painting after watching his videos
Now for criticism... the first things that struck me is that the colours look very much like a nighttime scene while the lighting (especially on the sky) looks more like sunset. A sunset would have more orange, red and purple in it while a night scene wouldn't have that bright lighting but a smaller halo around a visible moon.
The fave looks a little bit fake to me, mostly because of the very straight line between the water and foam on top of the wave. I think it would help to loosen that up and maybe have some of the foam on the side of the wave, too. It's also a bit peculiar how the water seems very still (especially at the front of the scene) and there's this big wave in the middle...
But I would definitely love to see more oil painting from you, this one is very pretty and I think you have a lot of potential!
PS: about your submission to #GimmeFeedback , we really appreciate your participation (especially on the comment side, you rock ) but we had to restrict submissions to two a week in order to keep our watchers inboxes from getting to full
So we'll wait til Wednesday next week and submit it to the gallery then

It was actually a Bob Ross class, so that's why it looks familiar! One of the ladies I know studied under him and gives classes now to learn similar techniques. It's also a monochromatic, but I'll keep everything you said in mind for when I give oil painting a try by myself! I'd have to get ahold of some liquid white in order to try a piece like this anytime soon! If you can't submit it right now, don't worry about it!

Raishuu In reply to Wheatart [2009-09-20 19:55:51 +0000 UTC]
Oh that's why I guess I didn't consider that it might be monochromatic, sorry about that. Should have been fairly obvious
I wish they had Bob Ross painting classes here, I just love his images. Sure, they become a little redundant after a while, but I wouldn't have more than two or three on my walls anyway

this is beautiful, the composition is great, the rocks, the clouds, the waves, everything, very realistic but in a dreamlike sort of way possibly due to the nighttime scene... good job
