this reminded me of a plotline from Animorphs

it's an old really long series of books (I believe that there are 64 total), but in one of them, one of the character's dads works in this top secret part of the government studying advanced physics/engineering and the dad is working on a project dealing with the possibility of alternate dimensions. The guy's alien friend, who is incredibly intelligence-advanced plays on the dad's laptop thinking that the point of the game is to fix the errors in the programming. He ends up creating the software that could enable humans to countervene the the law of physics that says that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light.
Anyways, that's what this comic reminded me of.
