Speaking of Flash Sentry, I hate him! He seemed like such a boring goody-little-two-shoses and is NOT the right match for Twilight. She could do better than that. But just to make his character more interesting, I think he's a double agent for Sunset Shimmer. A rumor is going around that they had "broken up", leaving him to go out and urn Twilight's trust, even when it means foiling Sunset's plans. But he intends to get her all alone and backstab her later, so his true mate Sunset can take over.
This is just my head cannon, so not everyone has to believe it.

So WHY Comet Tail? Well, he seems like he has more potential to be a better boyfriend for Twilight.

I think because of his ability to turn himself into a comet he could be very useful in the army along side Shinning Armor and Flash Sentry. However during a battle with a unknown foe, Comet and the soldiers were caught inside a barrier while Shinning Armor was being tortured by the intruders.
Only Flash Sentry had escaped the barrier and Comet kept calling out "Flash! Save the Captain!"
But Flash only flew away from the battle field with a cruel smile on his face.
Comet Tail's hatred took hold and exploded through the barrier. He ran the intruder through with his horn, picked up the broken Shinning Armor and ordered the soldiers to fall back.

Later one evening he found Princess Twilight inside a spellbound prison that was extracting her magic. Flash Sentry was there alongside Sunset Shimmer.
The young soldier busted through the doors and blasted a laser at the golden mare, unlocking the prison. But just as Comet was about to approach the Princess, Flash rammed him into the wall.
"Your fight is with me!" he hissed.
The two stallions fought, both of them colliding into each other. Finally Comet Tail broke one of Flash's wings and the orange pegasus fell from the tower. Comet soared to the battle below. He could see Sunset Shimmer looking rather beaten down on the scorched ground.
But as Twilight turned around, the golden mare fired one more shot from her horn. The alicorn swooped back to find her loyal guard had taken the blow.
Twlight released her fury and banished Sunset Shimmer to the center of the earth where she was to never return.
The alicorn princess used the rest of her remaining magic to heal Comet Tail's wounds. When her ora had sun dry, all she could do was to cradle her fallen hero until help from Celestia had arrived.
