Colt got his starter pokémon, Charmander, from Professor Oak's lab at the start of his journey, the same day Katerina, Gary Oak, and Ash got their starter pokémon. Ever since he was little, Colt wanted to be a pokémon trainer like his father, and planned to follow in his footsteps and become a great trainer. Though, through his journeys, he found his passion was not battling, but researching and learning about pokémon. He was afraid of disappointing his father when he decided pokémon research was what he wanted to pursue, but this turned out to be an unfounded fear as his father was extremely proud of his decision.

Colt is a rival of Rose's that he met in the beginning of his journey in the Kanto region. They did not get off to a good start when they met. Colt was trying to catch a Spearow and was running when Rose ran into him, Colt blamed Rose for the incident and the loss of the Spearow. He challenged Rose to a battle, thus the beginning of their rivalry. They never finished the battle because they were interrupted by a swarm of nearby Beedrill. Colt remained Rose's rival until after the Johto league when he decided he would rather be a pokémon researcher, though there is still some tension and conflict between them whenever they cross paths, and you can bet a battle always ensues when they meet.

Starting out his journey, Colt was a very arrogant trainer. He is very full of himself and confident in his abilities, leading to his tendency to boast about his abilities and accomplishments. Closer to his decision to be a pokémon researcher, he mellows out and becomes less arrogant and more polite. Though he is still confident in his abilities, and is still arrogant around those he feels are inferior to him. Though he is respectful to his elders and those he feels deserve his respect. Colt prefers to catch few pokémon and train them to be strong, rather than catch a lot of pokémon. He considers them his friends and partners. He is constantly switching out his pokémon to fit his needs and battles. They help him with his research into fossil pokémon, helping him connect with the pokémon and keep them calm.

Colt traveled through Kanto and Johto with Katerina before deciding to pursue pokémon research. They were childhood friends and thought it would be best to travel together rather than alone. Colt made it to the first round of the finals of the Indigo League Conference, losing to Rose in a 3-vs-3 battle and placing in the top 16. Colt battled Rose in the first round of the finals of the Silver Conference, ultimately losing to Rose, placing in the top 16.

Charizard♂: Colt got Charizard as a Charmander from Professor Oak at the same time Katerina and Gary Oak. Charizard has had a brash attitude since he was a Charmander, always wanting to battle. He was very confrontational as a Charmander and Charmeleon and even after he first evolved into a Charizard. He has since humbled slightly, but still manages to pick fights and loves to battle. When Colt stopped competing, Charizard took on the role of protector of Colt and his research subjects.

*Charmander evolved into Charmeleon around Colt getting his 4th badge and was a Charmeleon during the Indigo League. Charmeleon evolved into Charizard in Johto after he got his 4th badge.

Golduck♂: Golduck liked to lounge around as a Psyduck. He liked to swim and relax and was reluctant to go into battle because it was a lazy pokemon, much to Colt's dismay. As soon as it evolved into Golduck, all that changed. Now Golduck likes to show off and prove it's strength, often training with Charizard. He also acts as a protector to the research pokemon now. Colt met Psyduck in the Viridian forest while taking a break near a pond.

Move Set: Water gun, Confusion, Fury swipes, Ice beam // Hydro pump, Psychic, Surf

*Psyduck evolved into Golduck during the fourth round of the Indigo League.

Marowak♂: Colt met Marowak as a Cubone while on his way to Vermillion City. It was alone and getting picked on by a group of Spearow, Colt helped Cubone perfect it's Bonemerang move to help defend against the Spearow. After it was able to make the Spearow go away, Cubone decided to go with Colt on his journey, wanting to continue to get stronger.

Move Set: Bone club, Bonemerang, Double team, Skull bash // Sandstorm, Thunder punch

*Cubone was used in the Indigo League. It evolved into Marowak after Colt's 5th Johto badge.

Tangrowth♀: Colt met Tangela on his way to Vermillion City as well. As a Tangela, it was a very fun loving pokemon, always happy and upbeat. When it evolved into a Tangrowth, it became much more mellow and motherly. Often taking care of and scolding the young research pokemon when they get a little too wild.

Move Set: Vine whip, Stun spore, Bind, Mega drain, Sweet scent // Ancient power, Energy ball

*Tangela was used in both the Indigo League Conference and the Silver Conference. It evolved sometime after the Silver conference and before joining Gary Oak in the Sinnoh region with a group of Shieldon, meeting up with Jay and Ash.

Gengar♂: Colt caught Gengar as a Ghastly while in Lavender Town. Gengar has always been mischievous, even when it was a Ghastly and Haunter. It was always getting into trouble with it's pranks, causing people to get angry at Colt for them. Gengar would never intentionally put Colt in danger though, as he loves his trainer dearly. And Colt won't admit it, but he gets a kick out of Gengar's pranks.

Move Set: Night shade, Hypnosis, Lick, Psybeam // Shadow ball // Psychic

*Ghastly evolved into Haunter after Colt's 6th badge. Haunter was used in the Indigo League Conference. Haunter evolved into Gengar during Colt's 4th gym battle with Morty.

Jolteon♀: Colt caught Eevee in the forest right before he got to the Fuchsia City gym. Eevee was a very confrontational pokémon, picking fights with pokemon twice his size frequently, using it's incredible speed to dodge attacks from stronger pokémon. Jolteon is still easily angered and loves to battle, but he does not pick fights anymore. Even as an Eevee, Jolteon prefers to stay out of it's pokéball with Colt. It will go into a pokéball when needed, however.

Move Set: Quick attack, Swift, Bite, Bide // Pin missile, Thunder, Flash

*Eevee evolved with a thunder stone after Colt earned his 8th badge, but before the Indigo League Conference. He got the thunder stone from Professor Oak when he went to visit the Professor after getting all of his badges. The professor offered Colt to pick a stone between a water stone, fire stone, and thunder stone. Colt let Eevee decide what evolution it wanted to become, and Eevee chose the thunder stone.

Heracross♂: Colt met Heracross shortly after coming to Johto. There was a whole colony of Heracross in the forest Colt was traveling through. With the help of Katerina, he was able to separate one from the colony and battle it to catch it. Heracross loves sweets and tries to suck the pollen out of Katerina's Venusaur all the time.

Armaldo♀: Colt helped a Professor he was studying under revive fossil pokémon in Hoenn. There was a whole group of Lileep and Anorith that were revived, one Anorith in particular took quite the liking to Colt and chose to go with him when he left the facility to study more pokémon somewhere else. (This batch of revived pokémon is where Katerina got her Lileep) Anorith has always been adventurous, never wanting to stay in the enclosure that they built for the fossil pokémon.

Move Set: Water gun, X-scissor, Rock blast, Protect // Ancient power, Metal claw

* Anorith evolved into Armaldo sometime after he left Hoenn and before he met up with Gary, Ash, and Rose in Sinnoh.
