Description
This was in early summer on a so-so day, it had rained earlier in the morning but had cleared up a bit and dried. However the weather looked slightly inclement when I left home, with a promise of rain later.
I wanted to have a look at a local park which was popular with both sporting people and well known for having some Swans. I also wanted a reason to use the 200-500mm F5.6 a bit more as I had bought it a few months earlier and used not that much. It's lens that you only pack when you really think you need it, given that it weights 2.3 kilos or almost 5 pounds on it's own.
I caught the Swans and one of them was incubating the eggs, so I took a little walk around the pond, to see them from various angles. this was one of the later shots when Papa Swan was on Patrol, because he didn't like the look of certain dogs around and one little lapdog in particular....
This was shortly before he came ashore and made his displeasure know to the dog.
I shot this while seated on the grass, on my bicycle raincoat, with it closer to the short end of the lens on the D300S. (Didn't have the D700 yet, didn't buy it until last month.)
So it's 260mm but more like an effective 390mm. This is the great power of the Crop Sensor over the Full Frame.
No Crop, some AI noise removal though, it was an overcast day and the short time did demand a high ISO. Obviously developed from the RAW as Black and White.
The D300S is good until ISO 3200, better at ISO 1600 although you can use it at 3200 and 6400 with AI noise removal. The D700 is good up until 6400, although I do use a bit of AI denoising then. However the D700 can be easily pushed past ISO 6400 with AI denoising. And at 6400 the D700 is still rather low noise and especially only luminance (black and white) noise, no visible colour noise in 100% view.
