NOTE: Only download system resources (DirectX, C++, .NET, etc.) from Microsoft's website. Downloading from anywhere else (Softonic, Download.com, etc.) could harm your computer.
After a painstaking migration from Windows 7 to 8.1, my PMD/X editors broke. PMD editor wouldn't load models or the model viewer, and PMX editor simply wouldn't boot at all. I tried compatibility mode, but to no avail. (Also, my new antivirus was absolutely butchering PMXE, deleting .exes and .dlls left and right, so I had to put the program into a special, scan-excluded folder )
Then I remembered DirectX. I won't go into details, but DirectX is necessary to run a lot of applications that have 3D rendering. This includes MMD and the Editors. The problem is, PMD/X Editor requires DirectX 9.0c specifically in order to run properly/at all. You might have, say, DirectX 11, but it's not compatible with the Editors.
So here's what worked for me:
1. Download this:
www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloβ¦
This is your new, shiny DirectX version 9.0c installer. Let it download completely before launching it.
2. Launch the installer and it'll do its thing until it asks for a location to unzip. Make a new folder somewhere convenient (I used the Desktop), click Browse, and select that folder. Click "OK" and it'll unpack its contents.
3. Go to your "new folder somewhere convenient," and scroll down until you see DXSETUP.exe. Launch that, and let it install.
Done! Now open your editor and do a happy dance when it runs! You can delete your "new folder somewhere convenient" now that the installation is over.
FAQ:
It still won't launch!
I suggest downloading PMXE from here:
learnmmd.com/downloads/
And assessing what you might need from this list:Downloading and Installing MMD/PMDe/PMXe
Keep in mind those requirements are for the old English PMDE, and you can see what you already have installed in "Programs and Features" or "Add and Remove Programs" in your Control Panel.
Also look at the comments of LearnMMD; there might be something there that is useful. They're still active, too, so don't be afraid to ask them!
I thought I already have DirectX 9.0c!
Check by launching dxdiag.exe (do a system search for it or look under C: (or whatever your main drive is called)->Windows->System32. Launch it and look near the bottom for DirectX Version.
Will DirectX 9.0c overwrite my DirectX 10/11/12?
No. You can have both at the same time, and I'd actually recommend having both. That way, you can run applications that support the newer versions as well as those that don't, such as PMD/X Editor.

I've tried everything you recommended, and encountered no errors, but no matter what version of PMD/PMX I try to use, it just won't open. I get a loading wheel, then nothing. Any more advice?

So my pmx editor doesnt work, and when I did the dxdiag.exe, but it says DirectX 12. Does it only display the most current DirectX or does that mean I don't have it?

WildStudio In reply to RiceBae [2018-10-29 16:59:10 +0000 UTC]
As far as I recall, it only displays the most recently released DirectX installation. Try installing other the other system requirements in the "Downloading and Installing MMD/PMD/PMXe" guide in the FAQ section of this tutorial if you've already gone through this tutorial.
If you haven't, there is no harm in installing DX9.0, even if you already have that version, because the installer has measures in place to prevent duplication (again, as far as I recall), so I recommend downloading and going through the installation process to ensure that you have it.

That usually happens with the original (~2004) installer, the 2010 one I linked in this tutorial shouldn't have that problem.

When I extracted directX on my desktop appeared some RAR files with names like "dec 2006" is this normal?
π: 0 β©: 1
WildStudio In reply to Kellypiccolaotaku [2018-09-06 02:25:33 +0000 UTC]
Yes. There should be a lot of those and some .dlls (156 items in total are extracted in step 2), which is why I recommend telling the installer to extract them to their own folder. Don't worry about those files though; just find dxsetup.exe, run it, and then you can delete all 156 items after it's done.
Also, just to clarify, those are .cab (cabinet) files. They're archive files like .rar, but they're different types: .cab was made by Microsoft and .rar was bought by the people that made WinRAR. Sorry, had to scratch that geek itch

Thank goodness for this.Β I just got a new computer and I've been having trouble getting MMD to work....but I was able to resolve all that stuff (downloading the necessary C++ programs, etc).Β Currently I'm unable to open PMDEditor 0139, and I'm hoping DirectX v9.0c will do the trick.
I swear....more people need to keep logs of software requirements for operating MMD and PMDEditor, because I can't keep track of it all.Β Maybe for Metasequoia, too; I haven't gotten that yet for this new computer, but I have a feeling I'll be missing some necessary files to run that program, too.Β What was it?Β Python?Β I'll figure it out later...
EDIT/UPDATE #1
Looks like I still can't run PMDEditor.Β When I double-click it to open it, it just doesn't start up.Β Though, when I installed the files I had to create a temporary folder, because I couldn't decide where to install.Β There's DXSETUP (application), DSETUP.dll, and dsetup32.dll, and a mess of archived files (WinRAR) with old dates.
EDIT/UPDATE #2
Due to an ADD moment, I forgot the detail in the journal entry that I'm supposed to run DXSETUP to install it.Β Well, I did that....but, I still can't run PMDEditor 0139.Β I tried using Compatibility Mode (Windows 7) and it still won't run.Β I even tried restarting my computer and still no joy.
I think this is because I'm running on Windows 10.Β I'm surprised MMD can run on Windows 10 (v931, at least), but I guess PMDEditor in general is a whole other problem to tackle...

Don't forget step 3. .cab files are archive files; they are useless no matter where you put them. DXSETUP.exe will extract and put the .cabs in the right places for you, so your system can use them.

Dxdiag only displays one version (likely the latest version you have installed, but I'm not 100% sure). The best way to make sure DX9 installed is to run any game/application that requires 9.0 specifically (such as, of course, PMD/XE). If you didn't receive any error messages during installation, it very likely installed just fine.

It's been a really long time since I've used PMD/X editor. My best advice is to trial-and-error it: say yes, and if that doesn't work, say no the next time. I'm sorry I can't help beyond that

I recently reset my windows 10 PC and nothing I found here or anywhere else would get my pmx editor to open.
I thought it was crazy because no matter what I downloaded and installed, weather it be directx, .net framework, visual c++, nothing worked. EVEN THOUGH IT WORKED BEFORE MY RESET....
Long story short, I tried installing a steam game (it does a first time setup of directx files), and it worked. Whatever stuff steam puts on the system works wonders.
Oh, the game I installed was Blade Kitten.

Maybe? If it installs the directx files the same then it might. I often have to just try one thing after another until I stumble across the right thing.

DX9.0c is indeed listed in the requirements for the game you mentioned. It's pretty cool that Steam installs those prerequisites for you; the manual installation can be a little confusing (hence why I made a guide dedicated to it). Thanks for sharing!

Found some other prerequisites:
Downloading and Installing MMD/PMDe/PMXeThere is an English MMD version, which is not always kept up to date in the downloads.
MMD Downloads: http://www.geocities.jp/higuchuu4/index_e.htm
Requirements: DirectX 9.0c and Visual C++ 2008 (x86 or x64)

There IS an English PMD Editor, however, it is really out of date. So keep in mind that the PMD Editor English edition is not the best it can be.

working for me.
Tips for others:
Β Don't chu forget to "UNBLOCK" the file before you exctract the zip in file properties.
Make sure your OS matches x86 or x64 bit type
...
If it is too dangerious use Bandizip and format the code to Japanese (might work for asci-art lel)
