To do a ghost in Iray, you'll probably have to use a Pepper's Ghost effect

Tried to create a ghost effect without postwork in Iray... failed. However, got a good look for my avatars.
The avatar form looks like the picture, but solid rather than transparent. Then I rendered the scene without the figure and composited.
If nothing else, I figured out a rather toonish style Iray approach.
