Description
Here's something you might not have expected to see. A 5-light traffic signal head with red light, a yellow light, and a green light, and get this, two yellow right turn arrows! These actually do exist and at some major intersections in Tucson! How this works is before the light turns from red to green, the bottom yellow arrow will flash (this is as long as the green left arrow for crossing traffic is showing.) And then the flashing yellow arrow will give way to a solid yellow arrow right above it. The solid yellow arrow serves the same purpose as the full yellow light. After the yellow arrow goes out, the full red light will give way to a green light like normal traffic signals do.
It is weird and some of you probably think this is unnecessary. I kind of do too but maybe there's a reason for this. It's probably to let right-turning drivers know it is safe(r) to make a right turn but to do so with caution! I mean yes you can turn right on red and you don't need flashing yellow arrows to tell you that but for whatever reason these traffic signals exist!
My next to post will show a demonstration on when and how these signals work and along with another traffic signal type.
