Time for another update! There is now a deadline and a 2018 composition challenge is happening!

I'd like to take this chance to let participants know that this challenge will end on December 30th. On that day I'll be submitting the features during the day and I'll be able to keep adding to it as people submit their final entries.

I'd also like to announce that thanks to everyone's support and participation, I'll be hosting another composition challenge next year! I'll be publishing it on December 31st so I may make some changes to it between now and then, but here it is: 2018 Composition Challenge !

I've also changed the rule about going in order being optional. Submitting them in order is now required because with the amount of people expected to participate (which I'm so blown away by, wow!), it's just going to be hectic for me to sort out the features if they're not in order.

Since I couldn't find an existing challenge like this, I've put together my own! Not all the things on the list are composition elements, but they certainly will give you a bit of direction on how to set up your piece.

I will be doing one of these each month, and I'd like to invite my watchers and anyone who is seeing this, do try it out as well! At the end of 2017, I will be making a journal to feature everyone who has done all 12. You can find the challenge rules at the bottom of this entry!

And now, here is the list, complete with beautiful feature-worthy examples I've mostly pulled out of my favorites;

1. Symmetrical Composition
  figures don't need to be perfectly symmetrical, but there should be an equal and similar balance

2. Asymmetrical Composition
not symmetrical but visual weight is balanced using negative space or background details


3. Circle Composition
a composition which leads the viewer's eye in a circular motion


4. Diagonal Composition
a composition which leads the viewer's eye in a diagonal motion


5. High Angle Perspective
viewer is looking down at the character, can be as dramatic or subtle as you'd like


6. Low Angle Perspective
viewer is looking up at the character, can be as dramatic or subtle as you'd like


7. Surreal 'Floating' Background
(my favorite) the background is incomplete and it's elements surround the character


8. Scene with Full Background
if you're up for even more of a challenge, try making the background the focus


9. Group
three or more characters in the same image


10. Sketch Page
various drawings in one image with the same characters/theme


11. Dramatic Lighting
  can be back-lit, single light source, or done with contrasting hues


12. Minimalist
limited color pallet, minimal shading and simple composition
