Personality Description Breakdown
Alex has always had a penchant for learning. Whether it be from studying the reference books that he wasn't allowed to take home from the library (usually on the subject of horses), or by asking others their opinions on matters, he has a thirst for knowledge which he has no intention of trying to quench. He accepts that he'll always want to know more about how the world works, and is willing to do the work to figure it out. Unfortunately, this comes with the propensity to analyze other folks, which can easily put them on the defensive.
And speaking of defensive...due to a traumatic life that hasn't been dealt with in...most senses of the word, Alex is incredibly reactive. When triggered by a phrase, smell, situation...anything, his first reaction is to fly into a fight response. It doesn't matter if he's smaller than, weaker than, or less-well-positioned than his opponent. And if he's not getting into a physical brawl, he's quick to make a snappy remark, which can lead to verbal sparring instead. Emotional regulation is a skill that Alex has not had a chance to learn, and it shows.
When he's not picking fights, Alex is rather amusing. His manner of showing affection is to gently tease (or not so gently, depending on his victim's skin thickness) his friends and family. He loves to make corny puns, and gets as much enjoyment out of the groans and begging to "please, shut up" as he does the actual wordplay. He tries to be aware of his audience, but he's made enough stupid mistakes that you'd THINK he would know not to make dark or inappropriate jokes at the wrong time...and you'd need to thunk again. But he does genuinely attempt to learn when he's criticized for his humor being tasteless. It's just that...the lesson doesn't always stick.
While Alex is a friendly, personable creature, that is only skin-deep. When it comes to sharing traumatic stories, he's the first to blurt out the most horrifying, jaw-dropping tales as if they're normal. But trusting other people not to hurt him? Absolutely deranged idea, if you asked him. He's incredibly tight-lipped when it comes to ideas of what he wants out of life, his fears and dreams. And he is always "taking care of everything" because he doesn't trust anyone else in the world enough to ask for help.
While Alex might be mired in his own issues so deeply that he can't see the forest for the trees, he does understand what it's like to be scared, hurt, and lonely. He attempts to make sure that nobody in his circle feels that way - without giving them too many chances to hurt him in return. But he is realistic when it comes to helping others feel their emotions. He agrees that thinking positively can help change outlook overall, but some days just suck, and that suck needs to be felt and expressed. He can understand how that suckage can hurt a person, even if it's not something he's directly experienced.
Because he's still struggling to figure out how to manage...life in general, Alex has a lot of weak boundaries. He is more willing to bend over backwards to make sure that someone doesn't make the situation uncomfortable for his friends, than he is to actually place a solid guideline down. He is easily manipulated, and while he is aware of this, all he's managed to do about that fact is become resentful of those who molded him to be like this. He caves easily to peer pressure, and has a hard time standing up for things that he thinks are right. While he might be fast to pick a fight when he feels threatened, he doesn't really have anything to be fightint for.
