CRACK! The sound ripped through the morning air, and Xerces was taken entirely by surprise. Not having forgotten his recent interactions with humans, he was quick to whinny at Hawk, the new stallion who'd joined his herd just moments before. Together, the two stallions turned in panic, not sure exactly where to go.
"Into the woods!" Xerces called, whinnying the words worriedly to the other horse. Hawk nodded, and took off after him, not sure what else to do besides run into the forest. Once they had galloped some ways, and felt safe from the terrible noise, and the human who had caused it, Xerces slowed to a trot. His breathing came in harsh gasps, and he felt exhausted, on trembling legs. Xerces looked to Hawk, who was in much the same manner. The two horses looked around, sensing that there was no more danger. They weren't sure what to do now, though, as the trees enveloped them completely.
"I guess, we should explore?" Suggested Hawk, still catching his breath. Xerces nodded, and turned his attention towards the woods.
"Might as well," he muttered, before disappearing into the trees, leaving Hawk to catch up.
