Now, let me tell you how these characters came to be…Starting with the one character whose name is a synonym of Wind: Gale.
Gale the Chinchilla started out, in fact, as Nightingale the Hedgehog…English is my third language and I was unaware that nightingales are birds, I just liked the name…then I looked up the translation and changed her name to Gale the Hedgehog…she was briefly Gale the Mouse before going back to Hedgehog.
She started out mint green, with blue eyes.
She had powers of illusions, capable of blinding anything from organics to machines for short periods of time. I thought it was unique of a power, so I gave it to her.
It was during another redesign of her character that I got tired of the mint green hedgehog that I went and looked up different rodent species…and came across chinchilla’s.
Chinchilla’s can jump high, so I thought that leg muscles of a chinchilla could probably be good enough to make said chinchilla be a Speed Type, so I went with it.
Obviously Gale changed species then…but I also changed her color from mint green to grey, because, that color was grating my eyes and I just wanted it gone. I kept her eyes blue, though, I liked that color.
Gale’s a long tailed chinchilla because I mistakenly thought that chinchilla’s have long tails…obviously I learned that is not the case, but I already thought up how her fighting style could and the tail was part of it…so I decided to make it a birth defect – kind of like Tails has with his two tails, instead of multiples, I went for a very long single tail of a species that has short ones.
Her clothes also went through phases: jumpsuit -> jacket/jeans combo -> jumpsuit again -> before finally settling on the ‘Sally Acorn’ approach…by that I mean: vest, boots and gloves. They’re a different shade of blue then her eyes, but I hope that it’s not too distracting or annoying.
When I finally pulled Gale back onto Sonic’s world, I removed her illusion powers. While they might work in a particular setting, I decided it could be seen as Mary-Sue-ish, so I rid her of them…but I did make her a pretty good swordfighter instead, armed with a whip-sword.
The sword, Perfect Storm, got its name from the Fantasy Name Generator Sword Name Generator. The whip-sword part came to be when I was watching Dobutsu Sentai Zyuohger and saw the Eagriser. I was like: ‘I have to put that idea somewhere to use, I don’t care how crazy or weird it might be, it’s going to be used!’ Or something like that, it was late.
Gale’s personality started out a cynical loner with a job went to a cheerful, young hero-kind you see in anime’s and now has ended up with a quiet, cautious, but headstrong individual who will mess you up if you mess with those she cares about.
Gale, in fact, started out as a Sonic Underground OC, basically a leader-sort of figure for the local resistance cell she is in. That obviously changed, but I felt like I should mention her original origin.
The only two things that never changed were her eyes and the fact that she was the Speed Type character.
.........................................................................................................................
Rex the Brave Monkey….woo, howdy, did this guy change. Not physically, but duty wise. He was originally conceived as a Different Dimensional Knuckles, guarding sacred artifacts of his clan on a fog shrouded island…and that was about it.
Because he was different in regards of personality, which I, in fact, kept: he is loud, boastful, always thirsts for an adventure and has a love of rum and talks with a pirate accent (Thank you Post Like a Pirate translator!) (Guardian Rex learned the talk from traders that arrived on an island just outside the ever present fog around his island and he went for company there and info on the world)
His original name was, I think, Sharru-Kinu…I was using Google to find names that mean ‘Brave’ or something and this was one of them…I liked the sound of it, so I used it. But he always called himself Rex. Obviously I changed so that Rex was his name and not a nickname.
The ‘Brave’ part is something of a title that he has earned (Like Ryder the Fierce or Gina the Sly, for instance).
It was also then that I changed his occupation: from a guardian/keeper to a pirate adventurer. Because I love that accent of his!
Clothes wise…maybe only colors. He keeps a headband, his vest, boots…maybe the gloves a bit, but I can’t really remember them. Basically, Rex has changed the least of the team.
Fighting style wise, he hasn’t changed that much. Alongside being capable fighter with a wooden staff made from a magical tree (original) or a staff with a magic stone infused in it that made it like Cheetara (2011) second staff that can change size and shape before reverting to a simple baton (current), he also knows how to fight with a sword and a gun. The staff’s name was/is Staff of Ten Thousand Forests.
He started out and continues being the Power Type member.
.........................................................................................................................
Will the Leopard Gecko…born Williamina Leones…ooooooooh boooooy, this is the third member that changed the most! She started out as a little bird name Ava and functioned in a manner that Cream did to Blaze (albeit Ava and Gale have known each other for years and are also adventure buddies)…
Then she was a lot older cat shadow sorceress that assisted because she had no other option/'these two are her best shot' sort of thing before that changed as well…I don’t remember some of the other forms I changed Member 3 into, other then a lizard, tiger and lemur, but I am finally happy with what she has become.
Will, design wise, keeps similar clothes as Ava did, justified with that she has lived her entire life in near Mediterranean climate and suddenly travelling the world and its shifting and numerous weather and climates can do a number on a unsuspecting gecko’s body with no tolerance.
Since she changed so much, I won’t mention what kind of personality Will had, only that she is an over-eager, young teen finally seeing the world without her oppressive parents controlling every moment of her life and she can finally breathe and simply be free and herself.
Will has no fighting skills, experience or anything before she joined the team. As such, she either stays close to Rex or Gale or stays in a strategic location, lying in wait while Rex and Gale force the opponent in front of her, where she takes them out by surprise.
Due to lack of stamina, Will is usually carried by Rex, as he is the bigger member and as a monkey, he can move more agile then a chinchilla, especially one that keeps her metal sword on her back (this is where the baton weapon is obviously a step-up from a (non-standard) sword)
Rex gave her the gloves you see on her design when she joined the team: the Shockfists – they can absorb lightning/electricity/energy and can send it back tenfold! They also have a nifty mode that allows you to say ‘Screw you, gravity!’ and temporary fly, thus keeping her as the teams Flight Type..........................................................................................................................
Team Wind went from regular hero-adventurers to pirate-adventurers. They do hero work, of course, but they’re also likely to break some laws. *Whispering* Their official occupation is Treasure Hunters and they earn money by finding old, ancient relics/statues/stuff to either museums or antique stores or whoever hired them to find the thing and bring it back, so money’s not an issue and gives them more then enough freedom to travel around the world.
Their home went from their own houses in their respective hometowns to the Sky Galleon, the pirate ship that belongs to Rex.
As you can guess, I originally had them as pure heroes in the Other World (or Aonabara as I was planning to call it (It was a play on Japanese words of 'blue water planet' or something similar, it was late and I didn't bother to write it down)), so why the change in profession?
Simple: freedom to work independently.
What do I mean? Well, if they were heroes, they would cross paths with Sonic more often then not. And that seemed, to me at least, Sue-ish. And I didn’t want that. The characters deserve far better then that. So, I was mulling over what else they could do, that would justify them having the skills they do, let them adventure on, but also keep the characters separated (so to speak, they are on the same world, after all)…then answer came when I looked over my notes for pirate rivals of the team from the Other World…and Babylon Rogues…and recall that the Rogues are thieves…so, yeah, morally grey (or Hero/Neutral kind) pirates that go on adventures across the Seven Seas, exploring that which seemed to be lost and escaping from danger dashingly and daringly.
Of course, Team Wind and Sonic and Co can intercept each other anyway, but at something more believable then when Team Wind were pure heroes (like, say, in Sonic Unleashed, chances are that Sonic could run into them, given that he does have to fix the frigging planet), but it would seem more natural, again, from my perspective.
So, they became pirates. They may not plunder, kill and pillage as real pirates do, but hey, we’re talking about a franchise in which a blue hedgehog breaks the sound barrier for a morning jog (and also, it’s a thing across other pirates in various medias), so why do I need to stick with the traditional version?
.........................................................................................................................
You won’t be seeing much of their families for a long time. I want to properly design them so you can tell that they’re related, but not be clones of each other, just with a wig or a dress or a recolor and slapping a different name on them and claim they’re different characters (You all know who I’m talking about).
But for now, enjoy my characters and thank you all for the 100 000 views!
