The Death Pokémon
Ghost/Flying-type
Pokédex Entry
These Pokémon are often mistaken for grim reapers who steal people and Pokémon away to the other side. In actual fact, they are quite lazy. They have no interest in bringing anyone to the Ghost World as it would be far too troublesome.
Description
They evolve from Murkrow if they eat either an entire Anthenian Toedscool or the flaps they shed. A select few Murkrow find the smell of these poisonous Toedscool extremely appealing, resulting in their death and subsequent evolution. They are considered a regional variant of Honchkrow, although the Murkrow in Anthen still evolve into Honchkrow when exposed to a Dusk Stone.
In death, these Pokémon have become extremely lax. They float from place to place, searching for a nice place to roost. Their favourite napping locations include on top of moving vehicles and carts. Their silent, sudden presence almost always scares the poor driver, sometimes causing accidents as a result. Despite having a docile temperament, many view these Pokémon as bearers of ill will.
Ankrow came into existence relatively recently so little is known about their abilities. Circulating rumours depict them as grim reapers who kill and steal the souls of the innocent. A popular author published a horror novel with them as the antagonist, creating a new saying based purely on fiction – “When Ankrow comes, they will not go away empty-handed.” As a result, people have started giving these Pokémon tasty morsels in exchange for their lives. Ankrow delight in these offerings, even though they had no intention of taking anyone’s life in the first place.
Pen&digital sketch of Ankrow for my fanfic, Vibrant Hearts on ao3. Ankrow are inspired by the Ankou in Breton mythology (the design was inspired by plague doctors.) There are a lot of interesting variations of the Ankou legend. They’re generally seen as a skeletal servant of Death whose job is to collect the dead. There’s an Irish proverb that goes, "When the Ankou comes, he will not go away empty."
