The magpie

I used to take acid
an important thing to know.
There were three of us

there also only used to be three of us
just me now, another story

first we had a car
it broke. Which brings the story to the bus

in those grubby brown nameless fabric seats
we would sit quietly to hear all the noises
pick out which were voices,
which were bus engines and cars gone by
once in this nervy rapture, eyes out the window
(it's not fun to think
that people think
you're staring at them on acid)
eyes on that front window reflection
I had a flash of another bus
that was a tottoro chesire cat night time
eyes only acid heads
insane up skittering grin
up telephone poles and twin towers grin
on the front of that other bus.

Half asleep eyes out the window
today a magpie leaps from a branch in that reflection
and it's more than a moment before I've got it
straight. That magpie was on the other side
not flying towards but from the bus.
