Description I never heard 'I love you'
pass from your thin, stern lips.
Not one 'I'm proud of you'
or 'That's my boy' or
'You did well'.

I never felt your embrace,
no hugs from your steel arms
to comfort me when I was afraid
or quench my sadness or
ease my pain.

I never saw you smile
or frown or laugh or cry.
No pride shone in your eyes,
no shame pinched your mouth,
no worry creased your brow.

I never heard 'I love you'
pass from your thin, stern lips,
but what you did say to me
taught me how to be
sure of who I am.

I never felt your embrace,
no hugs from your steel arms.
But they lifted me
to my feet when I could
rise no more.

I never saw you smile
or frown or laugh or cry.
But there was never any doubt
that I had caught
your eye.

I never heard 'I love you',
but I didn't really care.
I've seen the love
I've never heard
in all you did for me.
