Spider-Man was at one point finding himself growing in power. During the Act of Vengeance event, where a cabal of supervillains planned to defeat their various heroic arch-enemies by swapping foes (or sending other, unfamiliar villains on the attack), Spidey fought all manner of bad guys. Powerful ones, how normally he'd have little hope of defeating alone. Titania, Magneto, Goliath, Dragon Man - he even fought and defeated the Incredible Hulk! No pushovers on that list.

As his powers increased, Spidey began to be able to fly and he began to exhibit omega-level abilites, like energy manipulation. As it turned out, he had been possessed by a cosmic entity known as Captain Universe. This insanely powerful entity was an aspect of a multiversal construct called The Enigma Force. It, in moments of great world or universe-ending peril, would bond with a random host to save the day from whatever crisis was threatening creation. In this case, it was a giant robot monstrosity created by the Asgardian trickster, Loki. Spider-Man initially did not know what was happening, as something had gone wrong with the bonding process. but eventually, he gained the cosmic awareness that usually comes with the Enigma Force's gifts.

You see, Loki had been secretly to blame for the entire Act of Vengeance affair, and once found out, enacted several end games. One of which was merging three mutant-hunting robots, known as Sentinels, into one massive beast of a kaiju-bot. He's bad at names so it was simply called The Tri-Sentinel. And it was sent to cause a nuclear power plant near New York to meltdown, killing potentially millions. Wow, Loki is a jerk.

Spidey, though, now some kind of Captain Spiderverse and with full knowledge of the event he needed to stop, beat the "unbeatble" robot and saved the day. Once the deed was done, the Uni-powers left him and was back to normal old Spidey. Who could just throw cars around with one hand. What a letdown.
