Okay, turns out I have NO access to a scanner
This somewhat forced me to practice coloring my old stuff...Since it's the only pic I have that I don't insanely hate, I picked my ID as a test subject.

I'd say this looks good. Fantastic for a first time attempt at PhotoShop. Wish I could give you more detailed advice, but I think you're on the right track.
