It is amazing how many people are so touched by this image and it is almost sad to say that i am one of them.
Saying that i'm a "cutter" is quite strange, as i thought for the longest time of my life, that cutting oneself is one of the most stupid things that can ever be done.
So now i started doing this myself not long ago and i am not sure how this is even supposed to help.
i guess i did it mostly because of the death of my mother, the loss of many friends who are now widespread over the whole country for their universitys, myself cancelling my studies at the university and not knowing what else to do now and finally my boyfriend leaving me, also in a way that hurt me even more.
So where i cut myself is the side of my body (which is also the place where i most enjoyed my boyfriend touching me), so i guess i don't do it for attention? I don't really know... I even told a friend about it, but she didn't seem so very interested, so it doesn't work either way.
I don't even do it very often, as i still think that i don't want to hurt my (more or less) beautiful body, but there must be something that makes me still do this. Maybe there is just no other thing that i am strong enough for, that i can do about my problems. I know that i should better be happy and motivated and so on and my problems would solve on their owns, but sigh, i seem to be too weak to do those more logical things.

Are you getting any help for this? It sounds like some talk therapy would be really helpful for you. I find it helpful.

no i don't and there are also only two persons who know about this.
My father and my grandmother went to a psychiatrist because of my mothers death and especially my grandmother asked me more than one time, whether i wanted to go to one, too, but i didn't want to seem weak in front of my family (i guess i am not the only one who wants so seem strong when everybody else is not).
So i guess i have to deal with it myself. survival of the fittest...

If you need the help and nobody will support you, then you need to get the help alone.

I just found a quote of Wilhelm Busch, which says:
"Some people would rather drown than call for help"
guess that might fit here, not especially for me but for many many others as well.
but at least it means, that there is a last bit of pride in us, i guess.

Self-harm is not always obvious, but attention seeking is.

Cuts on the arms aren't necessarily attention seeking. I do have scars on my forearms. I don't hide them - not because I'm seeking attention but just because I'm not ashamed.
Those who do cut for attention clearly have some issues and NEED the attention. Shaming them isn't going to help.

There are those with honest issues, and then there are others that know they can profit from mimicry. I am simply concerned about the thousands, maybe millions, that that are castigated and turned away from medical help that they deserve because of pretenders.

How is self harm attention seeking

Jauskmor In reply to BeautifullMonsterr [2012-02-28 11:40:20 +0000 UTC]
It depends upon why a person is doing what they are doing. It's no secret that there are those out there who mar themselves simply for the attention that they will receive, and because of such people, many in real need are left in the dark.
There is a reason why people dismiss and look down upon those who hurt themselves. Other examples can include bipolar, aspergers, autism, and so forth. Too many have abused the system and trust of others, that the honest are ridiculed.
I hope that answers your question.

ignore theresaannx's comment, Why are people so mean?
I think this isn't attention seeking, since she's hiding all her cuts.

i am not mean actually.
im putting my point across if he was agreein he should of put it more easier across
therefore i wouldnt have gone on my defence mecanisems.
the point of the fact is
you dont have to have a mental illness to self harm
you could be having problems at home serious problems and still self harm and want to show people there scars to help others not do it to stop.
not to get attention theres two sides to every story
i suggest you don't take sides.

I took sides depending on what i just saw, You went off and said something as mean as that, without making sure that is what he meant.
Aren't you the one who should suggest to herself "Don't take sides" .

It's fine, I posted the comment in full knowledge that some people will misunderstand it. Though the process is the same, the outcome between the two is different. There are people who do it for attention, and then there are those with real problems but are scrutinised because of the former. It is the exact same problem with a lot of mental illnesses (which a some of self harm cases fall under), but are disregarded because of the attention seekers and deceivers.
I digress. My statement was simply made to agree with the artist. Wounds, either physical or mental, are not obvious unless help is sort. The issue is that attention seeking is the loudest and takes away from those with real problems.

ixDenial In reply to Jauskmor [2012-02-28 11:27:21 +0000 UTC]
Exactly. people pity the people who post pictures of their scars on FB or myspace, And those that complain that their parents won't let them have a sleepover, Or that their father grounded them and took away their cellphones (lmao) .
And in the process, Kids and/or adults who are really suffering are forced to stay in the darkness, because the attention seekers want the spotlight on them.

I am getting better. Baby-steps. And, thank you for this image. I'm sure hundreds of people have said this to you, but it's a terrible stereotype that people with self-harm problems only cut their arms or wrists. There are many others who have done much worse damage under their clothes, where they can hide it. You've managed to portray that in a tasteful, artful way, that has hopefully opened the eyes of many.
