And congrats to you for letting one person's comment get to you so easily. I'm pretty damn sure this piece isn't to show cutting as a beautiful thing. In fact I see the complete opposite.
I have friends that cut. I have friends who have friends that cut. And guess what? They know it's a terrible addiction and they're not gonna hide it. Sorry if you can't handle the truth, but cutting IS disgusting. It's an addiction that involves self-mutilation.
Did I ever say "YOU'RE disgusting for cutting?" Of course not. And I really didn't mean to come off that way. I'm also disgusted by smoking, but I know smokers that are some of the most wonderful people I've ever had the pleasure to meet.
Don't talk like every single person who isn't suffering the same thing as cutters is obligated to baby them or treat cutting like it's something sacred that can never have a negative word spoken against it. More than anything, I pity self-harmers and I really genuinely hope that they can find some way to get help. No-one deserves to suffer like that or to force that suffering on themselves.

Good for standing up for yourself. You expressing your strong opinions doesn't give that kid the right to be sarcastic and rude. Why would it make someone feel like absolute shit? They cut! 9 times out of ten, hah, make that 999 out of 1000, they ALREADY feel like absolute shit... If people think it's beautiful, well they're likely not browsing the comments on an awareness project for the PROBLEM of self-mutilation, either. =.= He isn't helping anyone by being offensive toward someone who offended him. He could have calmly suggested his different point of view, but frustration only breeds frustration so his passive-aggressive comment isn't going to have a positive reaction from anyone.

I felt no reason to be nice, since they were being rude.
Calling something that has deep emtional ties with it's victims 'disgusting' will not help anything.
And... your comment..."Why would it make someone feel like absolute shit? They cut! 9 times out of ten, hah, make that 999 out of 1000, they ALREADY feel like absolute shit..." is so horrible... I can't even...

Look buddy,
Just be careful with your wording next time
I don't care if you have a friend(s) who cut,
calling it disgusting isn't helping anybody.
Say it's sad. Say it's unfortunate,
but disgusting brings with it negative connotations.
People do associate actions,
when the actions have deep emotional ties,
with their own characters.
I never said it was to show cutting as beautiful, I was calling on you for using the word disgusting.

Well then, I'm sorry you feel that way. And I'm sorry that it impacts you in such a way.
I do know that when people call something negative, they tend to refer to the person as well. That's because people are stupid and don't know the connotations of what they're saying. Again, I hadn't intended to call the cutters themselves 'disgusting' as well; just the actions. Some cutters I know are some of the most brilliant and talented people I've ever met, and I just fear that they'll give in to doubt and despair if they don't start realizing that they need to start doing something more about it.

Again, I don't care that you know other people who self mutilate.
Just be more careful with your words choices.
It wasn't so much that you said disgusting, but you had it in italics as well.
That almost makes it sound like the word is sneered, or said in a mean tone, like "Oh my, I can't believe that even happens, so dirty and improper"
On the internet, everything is text base, and when handling topics like these, it's not catering to the victims, its stating things in such a manner so you don't push them further over the edge.

Eh, I tend to abuse italics. I do see how that could come off as rude. Again, I'm sorry. I should've better considered how it would come across that way.

Have you tried some kind of therapy? I got a lot of help from that. Now I just try to manage on my own, with the strategies I've learned. Like, avoiding situations where I tend to start picking. And give myself a small reward when I HAVEN'T picked. What helped me the most though, was when I stopped feeling bad about my mistakes. Instead of feeling useless after an episode, now I just think "Okay. That wasn't good. What can I do to prevent this from happening the next time?"

Yeah, I've looked up different ways they say helps stop. Like getting fake nails but it made it easier for me, I keep my socks on as long as i can and it helps a little bit. It's mostly at night when i'm laying in bed watching tv that i mostly pick.

Then try to focus on the situations at night, and see if you can come up with some way to distract yourself from picking. It's not easy, but there are ways to stop.

Love this picture. It really shows the true meaning of self-harm awareness day, and it's true that it's not always obvious. I've known a lot of people who cut or scratched places hidden by their clothes, so this really hits home. Amazing imagery too.

Is this anything like "Day Of Silence"? Do we do something on this day? Like wear something specific or something???

Freezie In reply to Cerberusx32 [2012-02-29 01:56:23 +0000 UTC]
The Day of Silence in reference to the LGBTQ+ community is for those who have been silenced for not being heterosexual cissexual (Female woman, male man. Where mental gender and physical sex align).
The Day of Silence in reference to anti-abortion/pro-life is for the lives of the babies lost to abortion.
Most people put tape over their mouths and pass out notes saying "I'm not talking in recognition of the voices that you can no longer hear due to this issue"

One more point: Everyone does something to "cope"... Truly, we can all cope, we can all survive, we can all scrape by. I think that what makes humans truly powerful is to step above coping and address the source of their animosity towards themselves and others, and their pain. The ability to choose to live without coping mechanisms such as self mutilation and find healing in love and companionship of animals, community, etc is the hardest thing to grasp for many people.

My heart nearly broke when I saw this. That is so true, and I didn't even need to look for more than a couple seconds to realize what this was. I have faint scars that trace the top of my thighs.
As a post script, I read many powerful comments below. It's a sign that images can be powerful things and must be used wisely, and with good intent. I don't believe this picture was posted with the intent of being harmful or insulting to those assailed with problems, nor as a slur towards those who degrade and disregard the hurts and anguishes of others. I completely understand the myriad reasons that people may cut, where they may cut, and why. Some are attention seekers and cut their wrists. Others are crying out loudly for help, although not with their words, and also slit their wrists and arms. Still more are suffering deep trauma of the body and mind and feel detached and worthless, finding their cuts beautiful. They may be self conscious and, on some level, believe it to be wrong, thus hiding them. Or on the converse side, they may wear them as badges of pride for what they believe they have come through, and choose more public areas.
You never, ever know what someone has gone through: Please don't ever judge before you get to know someone wounded. On the flip side, posers are usually very easy to spot if you're in the true hurt situation.
Keep your heads up and your hearts open fellow deviants, and God bless.

if you get panic attacks from looking at a picture then you seriously need medication. i have panic attackes, from social situations that warrent it. i understand perfectly if its a distressing conversation or a disterbing movies but getting that worked up over a stationary picture, that is just your imagination getting the better of you and honestly, sounds debilitating. might wanna she someone about that.

Don't be so narrow-minded. For some it is a real problem and quite often is the case that they feel alone in this big world. People just like to push it aside and judge. People think that you just do it for attention or are stupid for doing such things. Maybe with this here people won't carry on being so ignorant like you.

Geebrowtar In reply to ilnamreh [2012-02-28 23:36:57 +0000 UTC]
excuse me
I'm sorry if I'm "ignorant" but that still doesn't stop the fact that I am triggered by this. Since I used to cut, myself. I know it's a big issue. But I doubt everyone wants to see this, even if it's just a symbol.
I'm not asking to delete the picture, just for it to ahve some kind of warning to it.Because not everyone remains unbothered by this kind of picture. I don't see how I'm being narrow-minded, I'm sorry, I may be selfish, but I really want to avoid anxiety attacks just by looking at the front page of dA.
