Interesting, I just two nights ago discovered computeSpectrum as a way to automate steps in Finger Finger Revolution.
Would you happen to know if there's a way to compute the spectrum of music that will be played x seconds a head of time?

Hmm... No i don' think so.
But if you know what music will be played you can do it beforehand. Just when you create your thing with preset music you can make a different app that will record spectrum for whole composition. Then output it as string or something and import in to app where you need to know spectrum beforehand.

That's my current system. FFRemix.fla makes the step-matrix and FFR.fla reads it and plays them 1.5 seconds before the corresping part in the song.
I was just hoping there was a better way, but I guess there isn't.

Well it goes for current flash. Though there is one hard way may be but really hard You can write and load music from ByteArray. I don't think there is such thing in the net but you may get sound info from there and compute spectrum yourself. But i kind of doubt that it worth the effort for you

Yeah, I think I'll stick with the current system, it would be a lot of data to read during run time, anyway.

in FP9 yours is the best way...
you could(in theory) somehow compute the spectrum then store it in a byte array then trace it or something and save it. then just use that.. but that would be to complicated....
BUT what i have read on FP10, it has alot more sound features(you can create sound in flash!!).
So maybe there will be a way then...

I hope so, but for now, I can just save and load string data with php.

yep... hopefuly cs4/10 will be much better
I saw a tutorial-thing on CS4 somewhere(i dont remember where), but this adobe guy made a line of balls and you can click and drag them and they stay connected-- WITHOUT any AS... its pretty cool!!

Mmm. Not really just 256 values in place where you want to know spectrum

AceDecade In reply to wonderwhy-ER [2008-07-13 01:00:32 +0000 UTC]
Well it usually lags while writing the step pattern, because there is music playing and notes are moving across the screen. It's practically unplayable when it's writing the notes...

AceDecade In reply to wonderwhy-ER [2008-07-13 03:06:26 +0000 UTC]
Well it was rapidly printing the data on the screen at the same time, so that could have something to do with the lagging...

If you mean tracing to Flash IDE debugger or placing whole of a lot text in text box then yes. Flash is not good with handling lot of text...

Unfortenatly only might. Here again i am not shore how much will be available from exiting classes but it will be 100% that whole music signal will be available. Then i may make little extension to get spectrum out of any segment in it
