When a writer puts his soul and passion into his work.

It will go unnoticed, often because of its length.

It is a rather sad fact, but a truth nonetheless.

For the simple emotions conveyed in just a few words,

Often hold more sway with those who are emotionally swayed.

There is no depth of the heart, nor a single thought spared.

For the effort placed into a piece that forgoes the winning edge,

For a hint of true meaning.

You will not read this piece and I will not expect you to.

It will not be popular or famous, nor will it see the light of day.

For length is the bane of true poetry,

And that is why so many of my kin have already left.

Thank you however, for reading this;

For you at least took the time to see what I would consider 'truth'.

It is bitter indeed and intensely sad,

But for the you that respects this, I am eternally glad.

-Chen, 23rd May 2014

I've noticed that people tend to prefer shorter works, and I try to write something short... and I end up writing long poetry and prose more often than not. Oh well, that's how it goes, I guess. Although I'm one to talk, since sometimes I will skip something if it is long, which I'm trying to stop doing, since long works can be just as good as short works.

Do you think it's ironic that this piece is gaining popularity? I only found this because it was on the dA home page. But I do really like this though, as it is very true; sad but true. I really wish more people would be willing to put in the effort to actually READ things. :/

Well...that may be the norm, but it's not hopeless. Heart-breaking and hard, but not hopeless.

Everybody has a dream. I have a dream, too. I might not get there. And even if I do, it's going to be a loooooooong time.

But no - it's not hopeless. Far from it in fact. If some people who dislike long poetry then there's a equal amount who DO.

EVERYONE: DON'T GIVE UP. NEVER EVER GIVE UP. TRUST ME, IT'S GOING TO PAY OFF IN THE END

I've been in the same situation. When I write, it usually becomes very lengthy and no one bothers to click and read why it's so long. It's disheartening, but I push myself to get over it, because I can't really ask people to change, and also, it's their loss.

I guess we have to try and find that balance between length and meaning, it's not easy, but it can be done...still a sad truth though

It's the same with prose, too. Novels don't do nearly as well as short stories or flash fiction.
Or so my Creative Writing professor would have me believe (looks at the stats for Harry Potter, Twilight and 50 Shades of Gray and wonders).

I have a dream of writing a science fantasy trilogy, but...if length is as bad in prose as it is in poetry, what hope do I have? After all, it only took me less than a minute to read this thought-provoking poem. If people don't have a minute for a "long" poem, they certainly won't have a week or two to spare for a trilogy of lengthy novels. :c

WordOfChen In reply to thecucuyo [2014-05-24 02:31:14 +0000 UTC]

The best way to counter that is to just work with a lot of creative writing groups. You will never get Front page on DA, but you will still get lots of feedback which is the real aim of prose ^^

Haha, well I accept that people will always do shorter works to amp their viewership up, I do it too, but the decisive factor is whether or not you're just doing short works, or whether you really choose to write ^^

While I agree that shorter pieces often do become more popular, which is unfortunate since there's a lot of great longer works, I don't believe that shorter pieces (as a whole) have any less meaning that longer works.

Some poets intentionally compact the meaning into shorter pieces, see Robert Frost's Fire as an example.

Not to say that there aren't shorter pieces which are easily forgotten though.

WordOfChen In reply to DylanSeto [2014-05-24 02:25:06 +0000 UTC]

True, but I am referring specifically to the DA front page x'D

My simple six word story has close to 1,000 favourites. While my longer works will barely get 100. It's just the way things are

DylanSeto In reply to WordOfChen [2014-05-25 01:19:35 +0000 UTC]

Ah, yeah, that makes sense.

I think shorter poems on dA have only recently become the norm, from my personal observations. Longer works had more of a place previously on this site.

In any case, the only thing we can really do is to try to work around it and promote work that we think is worth being there.
