Description "Labels"

We live our lives, from the moment we are born, as blank canvases to which our identity can be pieced together from the many influences to which we are exposed.

Newspapers used to be about reporting news, not about informing the general public about the latest celebrity relationships and fashions trends. In modern day society, however, the influence of media images within fashion magazines is something that has begun to acquire negative connotations. In my work, I have set out to interrogate the effects that contemporary media have on us as individuals. The series of images I have produced portray faces that are made up from magazine clippings that are intended to reflect the grotesque and unrealistic nature of airbrushed images, and at another level, they can be viewed quite literally as responses to how we would look if we were to copy ourselves straight from the glossy pages of a magazine.

The ages of the models I have chosen for this work was key to an idea that as a young adult we have only really just begun to develop our own identity, shaped from the social influences around us. Through the use of label shapes, I have intended for the work to be viewed as if they were commodities and as a representative link to consumerism and how the label is an iconic item that is all about consumerist needs.
