Description A mask one dons to disguise emotions
sinks tendrils beneath the skin.
(All the better to help you, dear.)
All is as you want it -
revealing only what you desire.
But your gestures belie your face.
The mask inchingly grows
becomes a costume
flexible and pleasing to the eyes
As it helps you hide yourself.
Now the voice gives you away,
so roots sink deeper
Now all is honey and warmth
(All the better to eat you with, dear.)

Tendrils guide your muscles
Tendrils move your expressions
Tendrils choose your words

Victim of the mask
and only your small and silent eyes
reveal the truth
