I try to make it a point to not debate with children. Or...At least those with the mentality of children who seem to believe that name-calling and other insults are perfectly valid arguments.
...No. They never have been and never will be valid arguments.
I currently live with someone who's been a practicing attorney for over 30 years. I've gone with them and have seen live debates in court. I've worked in a law firm as a file clerk on and off for about 4-5 years. I've even been in a minor court case as a witness. In that time, I've learned enough of how proper debates are done. Nowhere have insults ever been taken as serious valid arguments. Actually, using insults is most likely "contempt of court."
Of course, the point of court arguments are to prove that you're right, so I don't treat any debates that seriously. But I still want debates to be done in a civilized, proper manner. If you're acting like a child by tossing out insults, you lose all credibility to be taken seriously and I will refuse to debate with you on the subject. I don't care what your points are, I don't care if your points are actually right, I don't care how good you think your "arguments" are regardless of any insults you use...Insults don't fly as valid in my book, no excuses. There's a reason why there's a logical fallacy called "Ad Hominem." Using insults discredit and undermine the value of your arguments and make it difficult to take them and you seriously because it shows desperation. IMHO, online debates don't really matter all that much, so I don't see why people are so desperate to be right in them. I mainly debate for learning, not winning.
