He now felt watched, that something was afoot
The vague sounds of the night, he could not place
and sleep became a terror with no trace
of rest, and oh! The Book should have stayed put
on that archaic mantle, covered in soot
Now fear held him, not of this world or race
An alien thing he had to outpace
to find the secret lake's aeonic root

He could never stop for more than a night
Even though there was nothing to be seen
he thought the foot-steps had gotten louder
Behind him, and to know gave him much fright
That those steps sound from where no man had been
He pushed on, his quest to cross that border
