Description
BA-64 was a light armoured car, produced in USSR during the Second World War.Before the German invasion of Soviet Union there were several projects of light armoured cars that could be used for reconaissance. The outbreak of war and mobility of German troops increased the need for such vehicles. In September 1941, a captured SdKfz 222 was brought to GAZ factory and tested. A team of designers under the lead of V. A. Grachev came up with a compact armoured car, with heavily sloped hull, that could be produced on pre-existing chassis. In March 1942 the new vehicle, designated BA-64 (BA stands for bronyeavtomobil, armoured car) was put in service.
BA-64 was rather fast, with a top speed of 80 km/h, and despite being a four wheeled vehicle, it performed well in rough terrain, because of 4x4 drive and light weight. However the vehicle was top-heavy, and could overturn in sharp turns. Its armament was not impressive, just a single DP machine gun, but it was enough to pin down enemy's gunners while retreating from exposed position.
This particular vehicle is a replica built on the chassis of GAZ-67, which had similar dimensions to BA-64.
