Description Pair of Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica, lev persky) from ZOO Nuremberg, Germany

Story of the title: the female gave birth to a baby, who unfortunately died only few days (hours?) before my visit. I know that I humanize them and that it is wrong (because for wild animals, it is normal to lose their babies - the mortality in the wild is very high), but to me, the lioness seemed somehow sad. She was pacing through the exhibit, while the male was sleeping. Then she got close to him and he lifted his head and they were looking at each other - as I watched them, a famous cliche scene from movies came to my mind.

It was like that well-know and millions times seen TV situation, when the pair, man and woman, must deal with the loss of their child and both of them have different way how to overcome it. So the woman is active, while the man is passive - and after she gest angry, she comes to the couch, where he is passively watching TV and she starts to shout ,,What the hell are you doing? Do you want to spend life on this stupid couch? Just... admit it! He is gone! He is gone! ADMIT IT!"

Stupid humanizing, I know... but it really came to my mind

____________

INFO ABOUT THE ANIMAL:

Name: Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica)
Location: Gir Forest National Park in western India
Size: 3 m long body (females are smaller) weight: 190 Kg (females are lighter)
Diet: deers, antelopes, wild boars, buffalos...
Conservation status: Critically Endangered
Interesting facts: Lions are the only big cats who gather in groups. Packs of Asiatic lions have less members than packs of African lions | there are only some 360 Asiatic lions. Fortunately, their numbers are slowly rising thanks to protection | lioness gives birth to 6 cubs. Babies are spotted | ZOOs are encouraged to keep rather Asiatic lions than African lions. It is due conservations efforts | Asiatic lions are still killed by people, who want to protect their cattle

Hm I think that they are really sad over this.

I mean if an elephant dies (as example) - then the others arn't just going by they are stoping and staying at the dead body for a while.

I'm sure that animals can be sad about different things o_o

It's a nice capture of the moment btw!

So sad actually I've seen it many times on this animal station on TV, most animals do exhibit a form of sadness at a loss of a baby. I've seen some animal go as far as stealing other animal's babies or adopt babies from different species (I've even seen on TV a lioness adopted a baby antelope, it ended sadly because another lion took it away to kill, with her watching helplessly). Animals in the wild exhibit the behavior they need to survive, which in most cases must be ruthless and cunning. When you think about it, what behavior or emotions can truly be unique only to humans? Reasoning? An animal can have reasoning on some level, even if it's only used for hunting/scavenging. Love? Some animals (especially domestic), despite what some may think, can have this and express it. People say not to humanize domestic animals, yet considering they lived long enough around humans to be "domestic" don't ya think they'd start to pick up our behaviors and habits? I would think so ^^ Sorry long comment I know they are not human, but some behaviors etc. are not truly unique to only humans, so don't feel so bad about "humanizing" them, cause ya never know, they could be feeling sad.

I think that they have emotions and so - but the death is so common in the wild, that they simply must have ability to overcome it easily

Poor mother...
Yes may be humanizing them too much is wrong, but animals have feelings. They often lost their siblings, but it doesn't mean that they don't suffer because of this. And the lioness was very likely to be angry with her mate; I've seen other species refusing the male companion for a long time after that they have lost a baby. I think it's a natural instinct, they can't be possibly immediatly ready to get pregnant again. Either if it's the right season for it.

You may not be humanizing that much, actually. Some recent research in the field of ethology (animal behavior) shows that many animals are more intelligent, more aware, and more emotional than they have generally been credited.

That's sad I don't think you humanize them too much, I think people give very little credit to how emotioal animals really are, there's no doubt in my mind that she misses her baby, I mean my dog for one has tons of toys (she doesn't have puppies so she treats her toys like puppies) and wenever she looses one of her toys or one of them gets so torn up we throw it out she paces around the house wimpering until she either finds it or after a few days realises that it's gone and we've given her a new one
