CHAPTER ONE

“Jessie?” Her soft voice calls out, and I just want to reach out and hold her in my arms, let her know it is all going to be okay. But I can’t. Not now, at least.
She walks out, and I manage to croak her name. “Alanna... I love you...” I close my eyes, which were changing color to a soft blue. Everything is dark. Everything fades.

My foot catches on something, and I fall hard to the ground. I get up slowly, shaking my head. “Okay there, clumsy?” I hear a familiar voice ask from behind me. No, no, no. No way. I whip around, eyes tearing up, to see him.
“Jessie?” I say softly, my voice wobbling. I stare into his kind, dark brown eyes. I sob, tears falling from my eyes, dripping down my face, some down my neck. “It’s been five years. Five years. You never showed up!”
He steps over to me, holding me in his arms as I sobbed into his neck. “Shh, I’m sorry. It took much strength to come back, you know how much time it would have taken for you. I got back no less than two hours ago.” Jessie’s voice is soft, calm and kind.
“I thought you died. I th-thought that you had been killed. How could you go down without telling me?” I ask, anger sadness and pain filling my wobbling voice.
“Remember, I will always return. I promise.” He says softly into my ear, stroking my hair. “Now, I must go. Goodbye sweetheart.” He says, kissing my forehead before only air was in front of me.
I scream, “NO! COME BACK!” I collapse onto the ground, sobbing.

I wake up with a jolt. “Jessie... come back.” I murmur to myself, wishing the dream had been real, because then I would have at least been able to see him one more time.
I feel hot tears fall from my eyes, not bothering to wipe them away. I get up, and walk out of my room. I trudge down the stairs of my house, and pull the front door open, slamming it behind me.
I begin to run, run away from it all. I have no shoes on, and wear only a baggy t-shirt that had once belonged to Jessie before I had borrowed it, then was unable to give it back, and a pair of sweat pants. I step on glass and rocks, and my feet begin to bleed, but I keep moving and don’t stop.

Hours later, I had collapsed, unable to move at all. I wanted to scream but my throat and lungs burned. My heart raced, and I did not move in the slightest. Rain begins to fall, and it is the dark night already. Tears have dried onto my cheeks, but they begin to flow again.
Then, I feel him. His presence. I suddenly have the strength to speak, “Why would you leave?” my voice is hoarse as I question Jessie.
He sits beside me, shaking his head. “What have you done?” his soft voice asks. Suddenly, he has collapsed beside me, screams filling the air as he slowly dies. I sob, unable to move and help him. He shrieks in pain, dying the demon’s death.
“I love you,” I murmur as he fades. Soon all that remains of him is the ashes of what he had once been. What I had once loved.

I smirk as Florence tries to keep up. “C’mon, you can do it. You were born to it.” She slaps my arm as she reaches me, panting.
I once again take off, sprinting for another tree, and right as I am about to smash into it, I grab the trunk, throwing myself upwards.
I turn my head to watch Flora do the same, but the ends up grabbing the trunk early again, and ends up raising only a few meters. “It’s not that easy, Max!” Flora yells as she does so.
She growls in frustration, kicking the tree with all her strength, and with her anger added in, she knocks the tree down. I leap gracefully from it as it is about to hit the ground.
“Ya know, Alanna could do this easily I’m sure.” I say, leaning against a tree. Flora glares at me.
“Never speak her name. I don’t want to hear it. She left me, she left you, that’s the reason we have been left to learn of our powers alone until we found each other. And thanks to her, now no one knows where the other five are. We’re alone in this world, and no one can help us.” She growls, eyes turning black.
I frown, “You know, it was Jessie’s fault too. Not just hers, because she wouldn’t have put us in this mess if he hadn’t left her first, and returned five years afterwards.”
Flora lets out a frustrated sigh. “Oh well. We still haven’t found the other five, and I’m sure they’re searching for us as well, while failing. Heck, I bet they found each other, and we’re all they’re missing! Why? Because you can’t learn to fu***** shut your mouth and listen to what people have to say, because every time you start talking, we almost die, Max! And since we’re supposedly immortal, we would be banished and wouldn’t be able to come back! We would be stuck wherever the hell the big ones place us, for centuries!”
I frown at her once more, “Why don’t we just split up then, huh?”
“Because we’ve done it before, and both of us nearly got banished! Actually, you were in the middle of being banished, and I had to save your a** and I got not a single ‘Thank you Flora, I could have been stuck in there for eternity, but you saved me!’” She shouted at me, her eyes were pure black, no longer their old soft blue color that were so much like Alanna’s eyes, unlike my dark brown ones.
“I give up. Let’s just search.” I murmur in defeat, shaking my head.
Flora simply nods, eyes changing back to blue as she calmed down. She trudged through the forest as I strained my ears for any calls. I let out a screech, a call for the other five. Every few trees we passed, Flora silently carved a star into them with her nails.
Then, we saw them. “FLORA!” I screamed as a white silhouette flew towards her. She shrieked, before her hands erupted in fire, and the silhouette faded in the heat.
“They’re coming. That was a warning.” I say, my voice oddly calm. “That means the other five are near if there was a strong enough signal the court noticed us. We have almost done it.”
Flora smiles softly, before we start running.
