Description Atum was the first of everything. He was the first god, creating himself and before him was just space, which the Egyptian’s believed was a giant ocean. He sat on a mound the god Nu, who is described as the primordial water. He’s also a sun god, more specifically he’s associated with the evening sun, where as other sun gods like Ra and Khepri are normal associated with the morning sun. When it comes to solar cycles, Atum was normally fused with the ram-headed Khepri (a little side note, some gods do fuse with other gods to make new gods a lot in ancient Egyptian. Think like Steven Universe, but with more people with animal heads.) Together they would become the god Khepri-Atum, god of the morning and evening sun and the solar cycle.

Of course, being the only god and the only real being of thought he made two children. How he made them varies between legends; either he spat them out of his mouth or he sneezed them out or created them by masturbating, his hand being the female part. Regardless how, Atum ended up with two children; Shu, the god of wind and Tefnut, the goddess of moisture. Unlike most god dads Atum was a good father who loved his children so much. So much so that, when his children disappeared one day, he couldn’t take the grief and sent the Eye of Ra (a.k.a Sekhmet) to find them. Luckily Sekhmet did find Shu and Tefnut. Turns out the brother and sister were curious about primeval waters (a.k.a space) and got lost in the darkness. Atum was so happy to see his children safe that he cried tears of joy. These tears became human beings and thus the human race was born.

He was an important god, being the father of all the gods and human beings. He was especially important with the kings. It was said that, when a king died and was placed in a pyramid, it would be Atum who would come down and bring their soul into the heavens above.
