Description
(Gainax/Toho)
- Rather than classic connections between Godzilla and EVA-01, it is more a matchup of opposites; whilst Godzilla is a Kaiju, the EVA-01 is a Kaiju killing mech, and both are the most noteworthy and infamous of their kind.
- However, what they both share in similarities is that they are both massively sized, have berserker modes, and are modified creatures themselves; Godzilla is a mutated creature whilst EVA-01 is a restrained Angel.
- Both are also themed after mythologies; Godzilla's name translates to God Incarnate whilst the Neon Genesis series contains Christian themes.
- Also both are Japan’s most famous/infamous icons of their respective genres (the Mecha genre for EVA-01 and the Kaiju genre for Godzilla), and have crossed over multiple times.
- Not sure if this classifies as an actual connection, but both of their series were heavily affected by negative real life scenarios, with Neon Genesis Evangelion being deeply affected by Hideaki Anno’s personal (and a bunch more) troubles which transformed the show from what he envisioned as a mecha fan's dream show into a brutally-depressing deconstruction of the Super Robot Genre, and in the original 1954 film Godzilla was representative of the terror of the nuclear bomb in the aftermath of World War II, showing a very clear difference from it’s modern sequels. However while NGE is still very widely known for it’s depressing themes and their origins, the original theming of nuclear holocaust has largely been forgotten in later Godzilla films.
