Description
Connections:- Both are the red-clad protagonist of anime-styled video games who mainly serve/served their roles which is meant to benefit society (shrine maiden for Reimu and scientist for Sol) as well as a hunter who tracks down those who cause trouble (Reimu being a Youkai Exterminator and Sol being a Bounty Hunter).
- Both are extremely brash, stubborn, aloof, prideful and are relatively quick to anger (though Sol’s a bit more of a 'fuck off' type rather than outright getting pissed off) while also not really being the nicest people, but throughout the series they do gain more meaningful relationships and become less isolated.
- Both have been shown to be extremely lazy, hardly putting any effort into most things (even if they learn stuff extremely quickly), and often irritated when having to deal with opponents (Reimu, despite being extremely talented and gifted, hasn’t reached her full potential due to her laziness, while Sol hates working any harder than he has to, rarely putting much effort into anything that isn't related to his goals, and his laziness is even reflected in his fighting style and extends to how he raised Sin).
- However, even when not trying, they still steamroll most of the characters in the series just through raw and brute power due to the special powers connected to them (The Powers of a Shrine Maiden for Reimu and The Flame of Corruption for Sol (yeah it’s apparently not just a title for Sol, I looked it up) with them being able to access higher power when necessary (God Summoning and Dragon Install respectively).
- Despite their anti-social personality and antagonistic attitude against those who stand for justice (Reimu being against Byakuren wanting equality between gods, humans and youkai, and Sol cynically mocking Ky's "justice"), they’re still good people at heart who just want things to be better than they are now (Reimu really wants peace between humans and youkai, and Sol being utterly dedicated to prevent further tragedy).
- This is also due to their roles within their worlds and how they look on them (Reimu using her jobs as a Shrine Maiden to find purpose and identity, and Sol seeing himself as a 'monster' because of being a Gear) leading them to hunt down a certain race of beings (Youkai and Gears respectively), though it’s a bit more nuanced than that, sort of (Yukari describes Reimu's job as not being that of a youkai exterminator, but rather a "balancer between humans and youkai", who prevents youkai from attacking humans and humans from becoming youkai, while Sol bears the guilt of working on the Gear Project, humanity's near extinction, Aria's death, and especially the burden of That Man's betrayal, which fuels his goal of eliminating all Gears and killing That Man).
- Both also have a relationship with the person who is seen as the ruler/creator of the people who they usually fight and with that person constantly trolling them (Yukari Yakumo and That Man/Asuka R. Kreuz), with said relationship being... heated, to say the least (Reimu finds Yukari annoying as shit and just wants her to leave her and her shrine alone, while Sol's main mission throughout most of Guilty Gear is to exact revenge and "kill That Man" for his betrayal).
- These people are also kinda the reason why they have said roles (Yukari being someone who overlooks the Hakurei Shrine, pushing Reimu to solve incidents and Asuka/That Man being the person who made Sol into a Gear) but their relationship does have a positive side to it (Yukari has a direct interest in taking care of Reimu, since Reimu is the human's spokesperson in Gensokyo, and has been shown to regularly sneak donations to keep her from starving, while Asuka does actually care about Sol (but he was a bit busy trying to save the world), and actually does feel regret for his past actions, seeming to be repenting for having created Justice, and even patched things up with Sol and now work together with him).
- Both use important weapons within the verse to fight (Reimu’s Ying Yang Orbs and Sol’s Fireseal (plus all it’s upgraded forms and names)).
- Both participated in wars that happened before the main series began which shaped the entire series’ world (The Vampire Incident and The Crusades).
- Both had been moulded by media that their creators liked (Reimu likely being inspired by other shrine maidens in video games such as Sayo-chan from KiKi KaiKai due to ZUN wanting to make an STG with a shrine maiden instead of a spaceship and Sol pretty much being a walking, talking homage to Freddie Mercury due to Daisuke Ishiwatari's favourite band being Queen).
- Also East vs West Mythology (Reimu being a shrine maiden/shaman which is a title held by those who interact with and bring offerings to their "God", and Sol sharing a lot of similarities to Fafnir from Norse Mythology and even shares his name with both a Norse goddess and a Roman god).
- Also if you’re including non-canon stuff for Reimu, both have forms that represent them taking a lighter path in life and were brought in due to multiversal/time travel shenanigans (God-Summoning Shaman Reimu and Order Sol).
- Also they were involved in tournament arcs (The Hakugyoku Arena and The Second Holy Order Selection Tournament).
Tried to correct the connections based on someone’s arguments, hopefully this will do
For those who want to say the whole "Big Buff Dude vs Small Anime Girl' thing, Doflamingo vs Nui and Alphonse Elric vs Nezuko Kamado would like to have a word with that argument.
