I've been wondering if this sort of thing is selfish or not. Not in some evil way, but in an "are they making someone else's death about themselves?" way.
Death's as confusing a topic as it is depressing.

I'd call it more childish or instinctive than selfish; thoughts like this are understandably raw, and there honestly isn't really any true "mature" way to deal with the inevitable death of others, especially those close to you and/or those you've known for years or decades.
Something I was told a years ago was that funerals are not for the dead but for the living. "Mourn not those that have died. Mourn those that the dead left behind."
