Meet Torel (left) and Chris (right), the player characters of the 1998 SEGA arcade game "The Ocean Hunter," which I used to play as a young lass every time we were at the local Walmart and I had a spare quarter or two on me. I'm quite sure the game this game is at least 40% responsible for my deep and abiding terror of the ocean today (the other 60% being the fault of "The Magic School Bus Explores the Ocean" CD-ROM game, circa 1995), but that didn't stop me from playing it every chance I got. I vividly remember one time when my mom got $20 worth of quarters, and we just sat and played for as long as our quarters lasted, getting all the way to the fifth level until we finally died for good in a swarm of jellyfish. I recently looked up the game on a whim on YouTube, just to see if anyone else remembered it, found this playthrough , and was promptly swamped with a tidal wave of nostalgia (as well as shock that that this thing actually had a STORY, who knew). Hence this fanart of a 21 year old game that I doubt most people even remember.
