Description

Leader of the wild-shore warriors. A hero to many, a monster to some. Seemingly invincible, unflinching and undeterred. But this soldier has a weakness he cannot escape. A ray of light in the darkness. The heart is the enemy. The beauty is the beast. Is it ever worth it?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hugh always liked soft evenings like these, ones where it was quiet and the sunlight was blurred by the green and yellow trees. They partially blocked the light and made everything around him seem soft and relaxing. Bittersweet in a sense, almost completely hiding the small space. It wasn’t cozy because that was such a warm word and these lands were dangerous. It wasn’t comforting because there was an air of being in his own head. But it wasn’t unpleasant. He was comfortable, if not comforted.

He lay with his head on the soft grass, silver mane splayed in front of his cheek and back behind the other ear. He was facing a very small gap in-between some trees with some more going outwards into the distance. It was a lonely atmosphere but he himself wasn’t lonely. He could feel the warmth and weight of another body dozing off softly next to him, and it gave him a sense of security.

It took a long time of staring out with his thoughts silent and scattered like so many raindrops for Hugh to finally come back to the present. When he did, he shifted softly, pushing himself up and turning his head to face the chestnut stallion next to him, for once, looking peaceful. Hugh reached out his muzzle, letting it trail against a sharp cheek before he scooted himself forward and tucked himself against Summer’s lower neck. This was safe. This was right yet odd.

Summer shifted in his half-sleep, winding his head and neck towards Hugh, pulling him snug. The younger flinched a little at the feeling of warmth brushing the skull helmet he wore for his sentinal job; but every single day that got less and less. He felt so safe and comfortable with Summer now that nothing could take that away. Not even his own mind.

He continued to lay like that for a time, not feeling drowsy, not feeling awake. But he did feel at peace. And peace was all he could ask for. It was all anyhorse could ask, some days. It was within that peace that the forest sounds and the light coming through the leaves into the background. It was within that peace that Hugh began to drift, warm and finally starting to feel something akin to drowsiness. And it was within that peace that Summer made a soft noise, shortly nuzzling Hugh's soft, pink nose and spoke deep words into the soft dark.

“We've got a lot to do tomorrow, sleep.”

He understood; he knew those nights well. Not everyone could find a home in them like Hugh but still he knew them. More, though, Summer knew the need for minimal words, the need for softness and quiet in a cruel, sharp world. Hugh realized all of this, and knew his company knew that fact too. There was so much he knew, and the silver horse admired that in him. A shared intelligence, a shared astute intellect. Two casts from the same die, just painted different colours.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I'm the weakling of the herd. I can't protect or even fight along side you guys. I can barely protect myself.”

“I don’t care.”

“I came from nothing. I can’t give you the life you deserve.”

“I don’t want a life without you.”

“But... I can’t give you what you want.”

“All I want is you, Hugh. I don’t care about anything else. You’re enough. I’m yours. Just say you’ll be mine as well. Please.”

They knew the answer before Hugh even spoke the words.

“I’m yours. Always.”
