ORIGIN:MUSE
Giavonni Petrillo (formerly Janet Petty), 24
Some folks dream of being superheroes. Muse went out and did something about it.
There was a rumor of a superpowered man calling himself "Twist" whose gift was to be able to grant others superpowers with just a touch. They say that the effect lasts a year, and afterward one would have to go back to Twist for a "recharge". It apparently takes three 'doses' for the effect to become permanent. It turns out that the rumors were true, and Twist is one of the most sought-after people on the PLANET. With so many supers becoming celebs and many others desperately seeking their 15 minutes of fame, Twist was able to charge a very hefty price for his unique services.
He eschews the military, or anyone of any glaringly zealous religious beliefs. He has worked his 'magic' for a few corporations to produce superpowered mascots and/or high level metahuman security officers, but, for the most part, considering himself an "Agent of Discord", he sells his services to the rich and bored thrillseekers of the world.
Janet Petty wasn't one of those... not really.
She was the wealthy daughter of a shipping magnate, John Petty, who had been killed at his company's annual Christmas party aboard his brand new 'superyacht', which had been sabotaged. She was utterly distraught when her beloved father had died, even moreso that she'd declined her dad's invitation to attend the maiden voyage of the massive craft in order to spend time with the new boy she was dating. Her mother, Elizabeth, longsince divorced from John, but still on friendly terms with her ex, took her daughter in, as once John's will came to the fore, his new wife, Charlene Wynters, herself not very much older than Janet, got the family home and many of the assets, and evicted Janet from the estate she grew up in.
Janet, felt wracked with unnecessary guilt that there was nothing she could do to save her dad, even though there was nothing that she COULD have done. After grieving heavily, once overhearing a homicide detective explaining things to her mother and hearing the word "sabotage", Janet was determined to find out who was behind her father's murder.
She had no proof, but, she suspected her 'stepmother', Charlene. Inside a year and a half of John Petty's death, Charlene announced that she was pregnant by and was intent on marrying 32 year old high profile actor Patrick Lemke (cousin of Carl "Lightspeed" Lemke of the NYC based metahuman street gang, Deth'z Hed Krue ). Janet was no detective, but, she had many connections in the glitzy world of Hollywood, and her mother, Liz, had connections in the world of business, having been a corporate lawyer long before her marriage.
It took a lot of pressing the flesh and pumping folks for information, but eventually they stumbled upon the fact that Patrick Lemke's grandfather was Myron Walsh, another shipping magnate. Not even a RIVAL for John's business, but, making his way up the ranks. He'd sicced his grandson on Charlene and the two were carrying on a secret affair for over 3 years. Patrick convinced Charlene to infiltrate John's business and leak corporate secrets to him, which he delivered to his grandfather, boosting his business, and edging out other competition.
Patrick's best friend from high school, Jerry Daugherty, had been a military demolitions expert who'd been paid a pretty penny to scrap John's boat and deliberately make it look like obvious sabotage. Charges were levelled at Lucien Marks, John Petty's direct competition, who was completely innocent. Still, while Marks' name was being dragged through the mud, Myron Walsh's company flourished.
Still, Janet and Liz were incapable of proving any of this.
Utterly distraught and possibly not in her right mind, Janet decided to take matters into her own hands. It took almost 3 months of searching to locate and contact The man called Twist .
He was a sleazy operator, but he was known for delivering what he promised.
His price was Five million dollars for the first small dose of his powers.
Many had gone for this. 65% of the time, this small application of his powers wielded what he would call the "Basic Package". Twist had the tactile ability to twist and mutate a subject's very DNA into something metahuman. He would lay hands upon the recipient for about two minutes and, when the mutation kicked in, said subject would generally become superstrong and durable. About three minutes or so would most likely add the power of flight. Those in the know speculated that Twist was the reason that there were so many "Superman" types out there in the world. He was the 'plastic surgeon' of superpowers. Sometimes, however - say, 35% of the time- and with longer contact with Twist (and more money in his off-shore accounts) a subject would manifest extra superpowers, or, even totally different ones. Some folks mutated into monsters, others manifested psionic or even quantum abilities. There's a rumor of an elderly, dying billionairess who transferred her entire $2.7 billion dollar fortune to Twist for 2 hours of "contact" (which some claim was sexual in nature), which granted her cosmic level godlike abilities. They say she left Earth entirely and spent the last years of her life among the stars. But then, that sort of thing was just a rumor - wasn't it? Janet didn't ask. She didn't care. She just wanted enough superpower to track down Patrick Lemke, Charlene Wynters, Myron Walsh and Jerry Daugherty, all of whom had disappeared off the grid just after Patrick and Charlene's wedding.
Five Million dollars for superpowers for an entire year? That was doable. John Petty had left his daughter 7 million dollars in his will, plus a healthy stipend from his life insurance policy, which still named she and her mother as beneficiaries. She paid the charismatic power broker his desired fee plus a little extra for a hot dose of his mojo. Twist bade her to disrobe. She reluctantly did so, and the seemingly sinister silk-suited superhuman placed his hands on her shoulders. His left hand began to glow with an unearthly orange light, while his right cascaded with a purple lumination. His eyes went irisless and the very air began to crackle and hum. Janet felt odd vibrations radiate through her, like mild electric shocks. Her bones and sinews seemed to stretch a bit. She went blind and deaf for what seemed like just a few seconds but could have been hours for all she knew, and she vaguely felt her toes leave the floor. Within the actual 6 minutes that Twist had been infusing her with his bizarre energies, the entire world turned upside down, then, suddenly - a white nothingness.
Janet awoke on the floor of Twist's parlor, nude and trembling. She felt different. She LOOKED different. The full length mirror on the far wall told her that she was now about 4 inches taller than she had been. Her musculature was a bit more 'extreme', as were her curves. Even her hair was longer, but its natural curls were more tendril-like than previous. Twist told her that the deed had been done, but, if she wanted to test her powers she'd have to do it elsewhere. She asked him what powers she had, and he told her that he had no idea, and that was part of the fun, though, he hardly cared, as her money was now his. The process wouldn't fully kick in for about 4 to 8 hours, and that she should get some food and sleep.
She put her clothes on and rushed to her car. Over the next few days, she'd practiced with her newfound abilities- Subsonic flight and a degree of superhuman endurance. She found that she was not exactly knock-over-a-skyscraper super-strong, but she was stronger, faster and more agile than most mid-level superhumans. She could only manifest true superstrength in a small burst, but it usually only lasted 8 minutes or a little less. She could, however alter her own density and mass to make herself invulnerable and/or massively heavy or intangible and ghost-like, but, again, like the superstrength, this sort of thing only lasted about 10 minutes with constant use. Her final power was the ability to absorb a certain amount of projected energy and redirect it as green ionic energy beams from her eyes. She could also, for seemingly no real logical reason, make her fists glow with a cascading, yet harmless yellowish light.
She wasn't the all-powerful supergoddess she'd wanted to be, but she was still extremely powerful and figured that this would be enough to take down the bastards who'd killed her dad once she found them. She related the entire ordeal and plan to her mother, who was not fond of the notion, or the fact that her beloved daughter had run off and squandered her inheritance to get her DNA tampered with, but was definitely in support of her daughter.
They both decided that Janet would spend her time training by way of active superheroics. As they had no proof against Myron Walsh and company, yet, the best thing for them to do would be to cultivate a reputation for Janet. This being a world of superhero celebrities, marketing was often more powerful than superstrength. Quite often, in court cases, scandals and in the media, when it was a matter of "my word against yours", superheroes' word held a lot of sway. Even moreso than the average cop or politician. Janet named herself "Muse" and, even had her name legally changed to "Giavonni Petrillo", after her father, who's given birth name was 'Giovanni', and leaning on his distant Sicilian/Moorish ancestry. Not only to honor him, but to sort of distance herself from him and his reputation, just in case she should fail in her endeavors. Still, she doesn't exactly consider her name change to be a "secret identity", because, as Muse, she doesn't wear a mask, and her beautiful biracial and superhuman supermodel-caliber looks tend to stand out.
Muse spent the better part of the year training herself in superheroic situations, building her powers, skills and contacts, all the while searching for her quarry. She still hasn't located them, as their business dealings are now operated through proxies and shell corporations. Patrick Lemke has 'retired' from acting, and even his agent hasn't heard from him. It has been almost a year since Muse got her powers. Time is running out as, if she is to keep these powers, she has to relocate and reconnect with the man called Twist to get a second dose, and maybe even the third shot that will make her powers permanent. Being famous, or rather, INFAMOUS, he tends to relocate quite often. Even if that happens, she currently doesn't have the money to buy more superpowers. Will desperate times call for desperate measures?

Trivia:
-Though she doesn't notice, Muse has, since gaining her powers, developed a deep-seated dislike for the stories of Greek. Roman and Norse mythology that she can't explain.
-The enigmatic "Twist" - the man who gave Muse her superpowers- is a "reality wraith". A remnant of both the mad gods, each calling themselves "Ragnarok", who caused the Universal Destruction events and perished within them. He only exists due to the dying machinations of Eris as revenge on Hera, Thor, Zeus and Frigga whom she blames for their indiscretions that led to the existence of both Ragnaroks and the destructions of their respective realities, each of which caused horrible deaths for those versions of Eris and her children, native to those Earths, which she, THIS version of Eris could vividly remember for some reason. She is the reason that every person Twist empowers develops a deep inborn mistrust and hatred for the 4 aforementioned gods, and a posthypnotic desire to destroy them, should they ever meet.
