Description

Riley had no idea what they were doing wandering the deserts outside San Marceau. After all, you wouldn't want to get caught in the open, especially at midnight. He clutched the revolver in his hands- a Smith and Wesson M19 that Cayden had under his car seat for some reason- and walked anxiously towards the roar they had heard.

Strangely enough, it was quiet. At this time of year, Riley would've expected to hear frogs, crickets, birds, and even cars driving down the sparsely used road nearby. Instead, there was only the wind. The cat's heartbeat quickened as he placed his finger on the revolver's trigger, eyes twitching around for movement.

Meanwhile, behind him, Cayden was walking with the air of a trained professional, cool and composed as if he'd done this before, though Riley knew he hadn't. The mouse aimed his powerful flashlight ahead even though it wasn't on.

You didn't want it to notice you first.

Cayden tapped Riley's shoulder with his flashlight and pointed towards a figure hunched by the remains of a bonfire. Riley narrowed his eyes. From where they stood, he couldn't discern anything about the figure. Tentatively, he lifted the revolver, aiming for the figure's head. He could feel his hands shaking.

You only have six shots, Cayden had told him. Don't run out of bullets. By the time you reload, that thing'll cut you open.

Riley took a deep breath. With an exhale, he pulled the trigger.

An orange pop lit up the night as Riley fired off a shot towards the figure. A roar pierced the sky as the hunched figure stood up, turning towards the pair.

"That didn't do anything!" Riley yelled. The cat's eyes went wide as the figure crouched on all fours and lunged towards them. Calmly, Cayden raised the flashlight and turned it on, shining a bright light into the monster's eyes. It stumbled, covering an eye with a bony hand.

Five shots left...

Backing away slightly, Riley levelled off two more shots, both hitting the creature in the chest with a spray of blood.

Three shots left...

"Cayden? What do I do?" The cat whimpered.

The mouse cocked his head, staring at the creature curiously. "Try aiming for the neck."

"You think I can hit that?" Riley screamed in response. By this point, the creature regained composure and let out a snarl. It raised a clawed hand and prepared to swing it down on the pair.

Riley panicked and fired twice at the hand. The first shot missed while the second flew short and instead caught the creature's wrist, eliciting a primal screech. Riley prepared to take another shot when he realised something.

One shot left...

Cayden nodded encouragingly at the cat, but Riley was panicking. How could he take this thing down with a single bullet?

The monster growled, standing up to its full height. Riley whimpered. It was twice their size, easily. His hands quivered as he closed an eye and aimed upwards at the twitching, drooling monster.

With one last pat of encouragement from Cayden, Riley pulled the trigger.
