While marching my way through the thick vegetation of this jungle, I nearly got my toes lopped off by this small yet voracious creature.

Quite small yet it did not seem threatened by me at all, making hissing sounds at me as if it was annoyed I nearly tread on it. I backed away a little to observe it from a safe distance, although I doubt it could do serious injury to me beyond some bite marks.

When out of i’s sight, it appeared absentminded, every now and then it would dig in the ground around itself, presumably for food. It seemed hungry. From my pack I produced a half-eaten apple, which I gently tumbled toward the creature. It stared at it, bewildered. It struck it with its pincers but seemed not to be appetized.

However, not long after the fruit would attract a cloud of large jungle native flies. Each one nearly the size of my thumb, incredible, and freaky. I watched as the plant creature’s eyes widened upon the sight, I could see drool seeping from its fanged jaws. In a split-second, its long tongue lashed out and roped the insect into its maw! An audible “gulp” and a lick of its lips and the fly was no more. One by one it would entangle or snatch with its pincers, eating every last one of the bloated bugs.

Curiously, it seems that the toothy pincers attached to its arms are actually mouths! Once trapped inside the flies went right to its belly. Without a single fly left, it sat satisfied with its engorged belly. It’s movements slowing, as if using most of its energy to digest its prey.

With it calmed down, I shuffled closer on my stomach to get a close-up picture. It looked puzzled, yet far less hostile. Guess we’re all beasts when we’re hungry.
